Look what I got to watch Valentine's Day!

Look what I got to watch Valentine's Day!

Look what I got to watch Valentine's Day!

Look what I got to watch Valentine's Day!

For the first time, I got to watch babies with my herd name being born and didn't have my hands in it. I did get yuck on my shirt, though.

For the dogs, I tried my darndest to get a pic with the pup and the Lab touching noses, but somebody always got in my way. You can see the little girl goat's head in the bottom left hand corner.

I was so proud of my son! It's an awakening when you've been in the same position before and he was just a child. To see him react to a slight emergency and take care of it without even flinching had me in awe of him! Never ceases to amaze a mother when she sees her baby react like a grown man!

Being there for the birth was just as exiciting as it ever was!

that is totally awesome...i also had to deliver babies on valentines day..unfortunately i wasnt there for the first one coming out and it didnt survive, yet all the others did...took them all to the vet this morning and all was doing great...this was our dogs first litter and she is the best mom you could ask for...it is amazing when we get to be a part of such a miracle..my son couldnt take it tho..said it was too messy and gross for him, which is ok...he is so protective now, i have to make him leave them alone..he is constantly checking to make sure they are ok and the mom has plenty of food and water available......anyway, congrats and thank you for sharing the pictures with us

Got a progress report today and babies are doing fine! Momma doesn't like to get milked, though. LOL It's her first time, so it's understandable.

They are so sweet and soft!

LOL Understand about the messiness. Tell your son he should try cleaning off just the face of a baby goat! EEEWWWW

No, it is NOT true! They will taste almost anything, though. LOL They like paper because it has something in it, salt I think, that t hey need. They also like the glue that the paper is glued on to a can with, but they don't EAT the can. They eat the tops of weeds and bushes but won't eat it to the ground. They LOVE roses and rose leaves but leave the stalks alone, but it's not because of the thorns. They will eat the thistle itself from a Canadian Thistle but won't eat the leaves. OUCH!!! Actually, they are picky eaters.

My DIL sent me this one out of her camera. Remeber that these babies were born on Valentine's day, ok? Look above the head of the momma goat and just a little to the right... actually above the top of her neck, next to my son's hand. Good omen, I call it!

Look what I got to watch Valentine's Day!

I just saw this post......haven't been getting around many places here lately.

How awsome....the baby goats are sooooooo cute. Going though the birthing process is really an experience. I was so lucky with my Mommy eskie (Destiny) out of 7 litters, she never lost a puppy.....& the best loving mommy dog ever could be.

It's awsome to actually be there for the birth....how exciting that was for you....& not to be the one responsible....that being passed on to your son who carried on his mothers talent & touch.....what a wonderful valentines day present.

I love goats.. but I do have to say, there eyes freak me out a bit.

I once saved a goat, I thought I'd share the story.

When I was a teen, about 14, I had a mentor/youth group provider who was a huge hippie and lived off the land. He had horses and goats and chickens and all manners of animals.

Well I was to spend the weekend there and my aunt dropped me off at his farm, he hadn't gotten back from a trip in town yet.. which was common, i spent time at his farm before alone usually just busying myself with animal care or whatnot.

Well when i walked in the barn I heard this HORRIBLE noise.. it was the male goat, and he was stumbling all around bleating loudly, and kept making weird motions with his neck.

Well, (I am so proud of myself still for having the presence of mind to do this) I remembered that the nearest neighbor about a mile away had highland cattle and also some experience with goats too, so I got a wheelbarrow, put in some straw, and lifted the VERY HEAVY goat into the wheelbarrow. And off we went - to the next neighbors farm.

When I got there she was there. She was a German lady, so I didn't understand all of what she said. But I understood enough to know that there was definetly something going on with the goat. She was able to call the local Veterinarian who came out in about 20 min.

The goat I guess as it turned out, had swallowed a plastic bag, which was caught in his stomach/intestines and was causing his intestines to bunch up or something, I can't remember exactly. But the vet did say if we had left him any longer, he probably would have died!

So thats my story, of the day i saved a goat. he went on to live a fine life with his "wife", the female goat and even went on to have babies.

I was full of pride that day and still am for having the prescence of mind to take the goat to the next farm over, knowing that it might be a while before the youth group leader got home.

My exhusband and his wife raise goats on their farm. I enjoy hearing about the goats from my twin grandsons after they visit the ex's farm. I live in town, so goats are out to the question as pets for me. I hear they are quite crafty at escaping!

What an awesome thing you did saving that goat Mandie......I know what a wonderful feeling it is knowing that what you did actually saved it's life. Having that presence of mind at that age......showed a huge caring heart (even if you have a problem with their eyes...lol) some do have very strange looking eyes.

I have a love for all animals.....For the good of my own sanity, I know my limits on how many animals I can care for by myself.....my 6 doggies is pushing it....trying to give them all the love & personal attention I feel is fair for them all to have....otherwise, I am sure I would have all 10 acres full of critters which wouldn't be fare to them.

Loved to hear your experience Mandie,...thanks for sharing,
Debbie

Mandie, that's some story! You have reason to be proud! I'm thinking, though, that this goat must have been a pigmy goat if you could lift it into the barrel. A full grown pigmy isn't light, that's for sure!

I don't know that I would have thought of taking it to a neighbor's especially that far away! That was some hike you took! I'll bet your youth leader was happy to find his goat alive.

PS What is it about their eyes that trips you out? The fact that the pupils are rectangular?? My SIL is the same way. LOL She likes the goats but doesn't like to look at their eyes. You should see them glow in the dark when the light catches them! I loved my goats to death, but I still didn't like to see their eyes in the dark.

Sept I am not really sure what kind of goat he was.. I do know it took a bit of lifting, pushing, and exerting myself to get him up.. front legs first then back legs.. poor thing was all stumbly.

But he wasn't very big, your right! So i would bet he was a pigmy, in fact I would think both of them were because neither of the two were very big.. they might have come up to the middle of my thigh. Regardless, it was no picnic trying to get him into that barrow, let me tell you. And pushing him was no picnic either, he was HEAVY.

I might very well be overestimating the distance too.. Its been a while since Ive been there, almost ten years. But yes, it was quite the walk, with a bleating, very unhappy goat slumped in the barrow. Good thing this was on a road in the middle of nowhere and not in a town, gosh knows what people would have thought I was doing.

He was VERY happy when he got the call from me from his neighbors.. the goat had been taken by the veterinarian by then and had to have surgery.. but he was VERY happy because those two goats actually provided him with baby goats and the mother provided them with milk and cheese.. he was a real live off the land type guy and also loved his animals SO MUCH.

I didn't even think about it at the time. I just knew something was wrong, and action had to be taken! I hate to see an animal suffer and I seem to have a sixth sense about when something is wrong with them.. thats not the first story I've had where I've helped save an animals life. Maybe its my lot in life to be there for animals.. I've always thought about working with animals.

YES it is those rectangular eyes.. reminds me of a demon or something.. just creeps me right out and gives me the heeby jeebies. LOL. And yes ESPECIALLY glowing in the DARK. Creeeeeeeeeeeepy.

Anyways, the goat made it, and lived on to be a healthy goat and quite the Stud, haha. If you can call him that. He went on to sire lots of really cute baby goats..and baby goats are SO DARNED CUTE!

Sept, what did you call the baby goats? I think you should name them things to do with love, just because they were born on valentines day!

They're my granddaughter's goats, not mine, so I didn't have a say as to their names. Regardless, she did a bang up job on the names. LOL The girl's name is Inglis' Nook Lottsa Love and the boy's name is Romeo.

Hmm... I'm thinking now that the goat you saved wasn't a pigmy. They're not very good at giving milk (the does). They have such a tiny little udder! LOL Regardless of what kind of goat it was, you were a hero that day to more than just the goat.

yeah, I don't know.. you have me half confused myself. All i know is it was definetly a goat. and i was pretty sure that they used goatsmilk from the female.. maybe they bought it though and i just thought it came from the female. I really don't know, were talking over ten years ago.. all sort of hazy now.

anyways, great job on the naming! When i was young and visiting a local farm I was shocked to find out they named them FRIDGE AND FREEZER LOL
