Copied this from a local newspaper:

Ink cartridges take an average of 450 years to decompose. Recycle your old ones, and next time you buy choose refilled cartridges. They work just like conventional ones and cost up to 75% less than new ones. Recycling an ink cartridge can save three quarts of oil. Just put your cartridges in with you paper recycling or call your local recycling center and they will recycle them for you.

Great post! HP recycles all of the cartridges that are returned to them and also you can call and they will send you a recycled package to return the old cartridge in to them so you don't pay a thing.
