I'm hoping for a little insight on why professional tennis isn't very popular in the good ol' USA. I follow it regularly, not just the grand slam tournaments but the smaller events too. Problem is, I can never find anyone like me, basketball reigns supreme in the midwest.

The quiet scares me 'cause it screams the truth.
Please don't tell me that we had that conversation,
'Cause I won't remember, save your breath 'cause what's the use?

Aahh, the night is calling, and it whispers to me softly,
"Come and play". Aahh, I am falling, and if I let myself go
I'm the only one to blame.

I'm safe, up high, nothing can touch me, but why do I feel
this party's over?
No pain, inside, you're like perfection, but how do I feel
this good sober?"

It's on the list of "sports that people know about and probably would enjoy playing but unless you are actually involved in said sport wouldn't exactly watch" the big ones for watching on TV are probably Baseball, football, soccer, golf and basketball ...and maaaaybe hockey depending on the area and every other sport I think falls under the same list as tennis .

as a former tennis player I can tell you when McEnroe, Connors, Lendl, Chris Evert & Martina Navritalova played, tennis was big....you had rivalries and so on....

today there are no big rivalries....oh sure Federer /Nadal...but they are in a league of their own....

plus junior tennis got pushed aside by the rise in soccer

I think there is an emphasis in this country on team sports such as Football, Basketball, Baseball and Hockey. I agree with Brian, in the sense that tennis is somewhat generic in terms of personalities, The Williams sisters are kind of unique because of their background but beyond that, there is little drama to grasp on to. Shame really because the game itself can have some awesome moments.

Thanks everybody, yeah - I guess what everyone said makes sense. I actually started getting into tennis back when Andre Agassi turned pro. I had a huge crush on him. The more I watched the matches, the more I realized I liked it.

One of the reasons that I'm into it is because after a while you get to know the player's personalities. You know who is a sore loser, learn some of their weaknesses and learn who their rivals are. Then when you follow a tournament, you know which match-ups are going to be a bloody slug fest. Anytime Venus and Serena Williams end up playing each other it's ugly! The same goes for Nadal and Federer, although Roger seems to have lost his mojo here lately.
