I don't know if it's even realistic to get off my meds with the help of my psychiatrist... but let's assume just for sake of asking another question that mentally I would do ok: I take abilify and lithium for the two biggies. Abilify is causing some muscle twitches and weight gain and metabolism problems (I have a severe case of diabetes). Lithium can cause weight gain too. If I was able to quit these drugs do you think any of these other problems would improve?

Yes, I think certain aspects of your health would improve if you stopped (or changed) medications. The question is, how will your mental health be? Also, as you know, it's important to discuss your health with your pdoc and any other doctors you see.

It could help you, a lot of the psych meds cause some pretty bad side effects. You're probably right about doing it with the help of your psychiatrist though. Tapers are probably the best way to go. I'm coming off of my antipsychotic right now and having really bad anxiety and mania, but I'm managing it just by keeping my thoughts in check and also making sure loved ones know what's going on and what to look for in case things get out of hand and I need emergency help.
