On this past Wed., I dropped from 5 to 4 mg of Risperidone / daily. And I feel horrible. I feel like I'm going through alcohol withdrawal - shaking, light headed, dizzy, and super anxious.

And it's making my brain want alcohol to take the edge off, which is not something I will even entertain. I'm in recovery from alcohol addiction and I can't go back to that.

I'm keeping active, and drinking calming herbal tea, but seriously this sucks and I just want it to be over with.

I'm hoping I'll start feeling better within a day or 2.

Just curious -- why did you go down on the risperidone? Was it because of side effects? Antipsychotics can be really powerful in terms of their effects on us. I recently tried to go off of Zyprexa (with my doctor's approval of course) and it did not go well. So I am back on 5 mg of Zyprexa. Anyway, I hope you'll have success in lowering the risperidone. Hopefully those feelings will go away soon.

Thanks WastingAsparagus - basically I wanted to try reducing my dose because I'm on really high doses of multiple meds that are sedating and also affect me cognitively. Our goal is to slowly lower the total amount I'm on so that I'll have better day to day functioning.

Yesterday got worse - I really wanted to drink and added nausea to my list of withdrawal symptoms. I was throwing up constantly.

I wound up calling and unloading on some friends, and also called the distress centre, Talking to people helped. Then last night I went to an on-line recovery meeting, and that helped a lot.
Today I'm still feeling pretty crappy although I'm at least sort of keeping stuff down. I have a couple of zoom meetings to go to today and otherwise I think today is just going to be about taking it easy and recovering some more so that hopefully by tomorrow, I'll be able to do the cleaning that I need to do so that I can list my apartment room for rent.

Do you think it would be better to drop by a half milligram instead? Risperidone is pretty powerful stuff. I don't know if you and your doctor would be comfortable going down by a half milligram instead -- to 4.5 mg or something instead of to 4 mg? Then after that, you could reassess whether you think it'd be good to go down to 4 mg. Just an idea.

Thanks - going down to 4.5 probably would have been smarter, but when I went up to 5 it was from 4, so that's just where my head went when we talking about decreasing it.

Bit of a moot point now though since I seem to have made it through the worst of the withdrawal. I'm starting to feel normalish, although I'm still a little tentative around food. Should be fully recovered by tomorrow - I hope.

Well I'm over the withdrawal now, and am not sure how I'm feeling. My head definitely feels clearer, and my brain feels a little weird - can't really explain it.

But my depression is coming back and I'm starting to have SU thoughts - won't act on them, no chance of that, but they're annoying.

So I'm wondering if I should go back up to 4.5 or 5 or give my brain more time for the neurotransmitters to level out. I have an appointment with my psychiatrist this Thurs., so I'll discuss it with him then.
