I found out today that one of my former clients was murdered over the weekend.
I work with kids at risk of being involved with the juvenile justice system. This kid was one of my success stories. Inspite of a family history of criminal activity and a mother who did little more than birth him he finished high school. He had plans to go to college if he could find the money. This kid worked so hard to overcome incredible obstacles in his life. He stayed away from drugs. He stayed out of the gangs in his neighborhood. I really had hopes for this kid. Then about six months after he aged out of our program I found out he'd been arrested on drug charges. The shooting last Saturday was a guy who was trying to rob him of drugs and money. My heart hurts not only over his death, but that he apparently reached a point where he couldn't stand up to the pressures around him. What a waste.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and also of the tragedy in succumbing to those pressures around him that took his life. My heartaches with you. Peace be with you and his loved ones, and may he know no more pain or pressure, resting in peace. ((((LL)))))

It's awful when a youngster dies, you did what you could. I understand you must be in shock, I'm thinking of you.

Thank you for your support everyone.
The viewing was last night. The funeral is today. I thought about going, but did not. Because of confidentiality if anyone asked how I knew the young man I couldn't answer. At least the police caught the person who killed him. Such a waste of potential. This young man fought so hard to not become involved in "the life." It seems it overcame him anyhow.

Im sorry this happened to you. It sounds like you did a great job helping him and he probably would have never had graduated or seen his own potential. Its unfortunate that he went back to an environment that took his life. So sad.
