My mom died about five years ago. I lived with her and took care of her best I could until she was admitted to a hospice hospital and died.

At first after her death, I would get awakened hearing her calling my name- urgently like something is wrong. This happened many times. Later, that stopped, but I began to get awakened with feelings of being poked and touched. No one is there. When I look around at the time, I notice my dog is sleeping, undisturbed.

These events stopped for a while but I am being awakened by the touching again. I have told my therapist. My therapist wants to me to think of these events as "reassuring" and "comforting." But they don't feel that way! These events startle me out of sleep and freakin' scare me.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

There are some people that talk about sensual hallucinations, but not sure that is real.

To me this happens in dreams but can be muscle twitches or other phenomena. The mind can integrate these sensations into the dream so they appear to be real. Your dog knows nothing is happening. If there was anything in the room your dog would be going nuts.

Go back to sleep and say good bye to an old friend once again. Grieving is a long process.

It can be one of two things, either your subconscious wants to hear her again and therefore replays her voice when you're sleeping and you think you hear it with your ears so it startles you and you wake up. Or it really is your mother visiting you and trying to tell you she's still with you.
I've had a few similar experiences. One night I was in my bedroom listening to music and I heard someone on the other side of my closed bedroom door call my name. I thought it was my family member so I opened the door, but no one was there. The only time I've ever "felt" something, was once when I was spending the night at my mom's apartment and one morning I felt someone pressed up on my back as if someone was laying down next to me, I sleepily pushed against it with my back and while I did that I realized no one should be there, so I shot up in bed and no one was there. Later my mom told me she experienced something similar. The apartment was very old and had many elderly people that lived in that building, so we assumed it might have been a previous occupant that once lived in that apartment.
