I became very fond of an older gentleman who lives here. He always had a smile and he loved to tease one and all. He always very loudly asked me if I would bring him back a beer. I would reply, "No!", just as loudly. Sometimes I'd tell him I'd bring him back water or root beer.
He was always outside when I'd leave and he wasn't there today. I thought he might be with his daughter. He died this morning of a heart attack. His name was Ernie and I will miss him so very much. I know I live in an apt. bldg. for the disabled and elderly, and that people pass on, but it seems like every older person I become attached to dies... (((((((Jan)))))))) I know you were as much a gift to your friend as he was to you. It takes a special person to be able to relate to older folks.

Thank you so very much for replying. It really, really helps. Momma Co died in December. My friend George died in March and now Ernie. My friend and neighbor, Cher, heard it first and came to tell me in person. She was so pale I thought she was going to pass out and fall out of her wheelchair. Again, thank you each so very much. oh January!!!! i'm sorry!!! (((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))
i know EXACTLY how you feel. my next door neighbor is this little tiny old guy named Norm! i moved in about six years ago and he's given me the history of the neighborhood and my house, etc. he'd putter in the backyard and i'd walk over and talk to him. he'd scold me about my yard looking bad! over the years his mind has gone more and more. he can't remember words like son or his son's name, etc. i noticed today his son was moving Norm's recliner out and into a truck. i was too afraid to stop and ask!!!!! i don't want Norm to have passed....i'm living in denial that maybe he's gone to live with his son. i like that version of reality!!!! older folks are such neat people!! they don't mind telling you what they think!! it's great! very refreshing! Ernie sounds like he was an awesome guy! take care of yourself as you grieve the loss of your friend!!! i'll be thinking of you!! __________________ I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies but not the madness of people. ~ Isaac Newton |

((((JAN)))) Yes, it's tougher when you live surrounded like that... my mom (87) says that the result of not dying... outliving everyone else.
I'm sorry for your loss. You were good for him sounds like It doesn't take much to befriend an older person sometimes, and bring light to their days. I'm sure he appreciated your interaction. __________________ |

Thank you so very, very much. I saw another man in what I thought was Ernie's power wheelchair tonight. I honestly thought I was going to throw up. Thank you for being with me. Thank you for understanding. Thank you for caring. Love and hugs, Jan __________________ I still dream and I still hope, therefore I can take what comes today. I'm sorry Jan And it's not silly at all!
My favorite AA friend is Charlie and he is 74 and dying of emphyzema. Every week I go down the stairs on Saturday morning and pray that he is there - I can't imagine not having him in my life. Big soft hugs Tranquility __________________ |
