Driving home this evening I saw the immediate aftermath of an accident. The car was stopped halfway into the road. The dog laid there moments from dead. Everyone standing there had their hands over their mouths. People were on their cell phones calling lord knows. I started crying seeing that beautiful husky there but really not there for long. I drove around and the police were about to arrive on scene.
I wish this weren't suburban. I wish this were country and that the humane thing could have been done immediately for that poor suffering dog. Cried the whold way home and am crying now. I know this isn't human loss but to me even without even knowing anyone involved it is still a horrible loss. Hugging my same sized large dog extra tight tonight. --zh |

I close my eyes for a second and say a little prayer every time I see a dead possum, squirrel or raccoon laying in the road! Mostly something like, "Well God, St. Francis, Laurie, Ernie (animal loving friends of mine why died way too young.) I hope their passing was as painless as possible and that they were not too scared. Give him a hug and a kiss for me." I often think about buying a little shovel to keep in my trunk, just so every time I see one I can stop and pick it up and just carry it off the road, maybe put it under some bushes or something, something more respectful.
Now think of what I feel when I see a domesticated animal laying dead in the road. I have stopped a couple times and knocked on doors to find the owner of a dead dog that was laying in the road. Part of me wants to beat the crap out of the idiots for letting their animals run free or because they weren't properly secured in their yard. What kills me too is how could anyone do this and drive away? And then how many more cars are just zipping by, and at the most just swerving to avoid it? Once a young guy stopped right after I did and went over to the dog as I was running up the driveway of the nearest house, and I asked him if he was dead and he said yes. He held up his hand to stop traffic (it was raining and this dog was laying in the middle of one of the lanes and people were just driving around him!) and he pulled him over to the shoulder of the road. I found the owners house and waited in my car to make sure the guy was going to go right out and get him. Sorry to sound like this, but it makes me hate the human race with even more passion than I already do. I don't even like to say aloud what I pray for to happen to these ignorant people who do such things. I go home and hug my big dog extra tight too. At least you and I can take some comfort in the fact that we aren't the only ones who feel the way we do. More people should understand the following quote: All the arguments to prove man's superiority cannot shatter this hard fact: In suffering, the animals are our equals~Peter Singer The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated--Gandhi Sometimes I lie awake at night in bed and I ask, "Is it all worth it?" And then a voice says, "Who are you talking to?" And another voice says, "You mean, ' To whom are you talking?'" And I say, "No wonder I lie awake at night."--Charlie Brown

I agree pebblypoo. Some humans are not kind nor compassionate. I try not to hate them but fully understand how others can and do. I have no beef with that.
The person responsible was there and he looked horrified. He was on his cell phone and people in neighbourhood were coming out from homes. Even with the best fencing and collars and such the best of dogs can get out that one time and.... I said my prayers for that dog to pass quickly and for the spirt to be free of this pained end. No one deserves that. Indeed we are all equal at the end. thank you for your post. I'm still poking my head out around the forums as I'm rather new to posting. If you don't see me for a bit I'm back in my hidey hold over on the travellers lounge. ![]() --zh |

Loss of pets, animal friends to me is devastating, I am so very against people allowing their pets to run wild, for the naimal's safety they should be let out in a fenced area and then of course let back in the home, I am a dog owner, animal lover, you know the type, I regard the loss of my pets and others as as sad as when I have lost human loved ones. . . but that is me.
I had an incident, about 3 weeks ago (I live in the country) a dog was running along the road, I stopped my car as several others did and got out and held her by the ring in her collar, she was so poorly neglected, but well fed, she looked like a husky mix, her fur was so badly matted, well you know how much worse this gets, bad eye infection, and she was a sweety, well another woman stayed by me as we spoke to her and she was sitting pawing at us to pet her and then she got so comfy she sat and then lied down finally after placing 911 calls and waiting for a response this woman in her new fancy SUV gets out and asked has she been hit? We said no we saved her from it and her owner apparently has neglected her, she said "she's my dog", we told her that the dog needed to be groomed immediately, the poor thing was gross, smelled had flea feces all in her skin, infected eye, overgrown nails, the whole scene from Animal Cops (animal planet show) her reply was "my groomer is sick with cancer and I do not trust anyone else to groom my dog". This woman was a real moron, I mean C'mon, a animal owner lets their dog get this bad off, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! She said "thank you" and pulled into the drive of her mini farm/fruit stand, she also has a few cows, a pig, and goats, and they look neglected, I was so angry that she could be such a fool. . .maybe I am the fool for being so caring about other people's pets? Well, after she drove off, Animal control guy pulls over, we told him about her and the dog, he shook his head and said this is horrible but the best he could do is to use the excuse of the dog's rabies tag being expired, and lack of a license to drop in on her, well I hope he did and I hope he also got a look at the condition the other animals were being kept. A good thing I am not an animal cop or animal control person, I would end up losing it and maybe going off on people like this woman. Sorry, I just had to add my 2 cents and let you know how I can relate to your post, I hope you'll be able to get this horror out of your mind in time, it is so so sad I know. Please take care now, DE ((((((((((((((((((((((((( for zenhussy ))))))))))))))) In giving advice seek to help, not please your friend SOLON

Are the laws different in different states? Because an untreated eye infection and severely matted hair would definitely be cause for removal of the animal and possible arrest on "animal precinct."
They have people on that show with neglected pets and the owners say they didn't have any money to take care of them. The animal precinct people always say that is not an excuse, you HAVE to take care of an animal, just as you would have to take care of a child, you can't not feed it and say "no money". If you can't properly care for it you should find it another home. It is very sad and although those people are horribly wrong I can at least see how things got worse and they just didn't know what to do, and they probably felt bad about it themselves. But "my groomer is sick"???????? That has to be the most idiotic statement I ever heard. Maybe the next time she cuts herself her husband will bring her to the hospital, find out their usual doctor is on leave, and will just let her bleed and get infected because he "doesn't trust any other doctor." I get insane when I see neglected animals. Have gotten myself in trouble for that a couple of times. Talked with a very crazy animal collector the state knows all about. She just wants all of these animals and then neglects them. OOh the stories. It's nice to read in my local paper when charges are brought against people for neglect or cruelty.

DE -I'm so glad you cared enuf to talk to that animal control officer! I'm sure it did some good. At the very least, she now has a record. So if more happens, that will work against her. You are an animal angel. 0:-)

darkeyes,
I sooooooooo agree with you about these idiots who own animals but haven't the faintest idea of what a pet is. I don't think you are foolish for caring about animals that aren't yours. I too hate that the animal cops at times cannot do much. It is criminal the things people do and criminal that our justice system treats animals as property. I have had much positive doggie time since that night with lots of dogs other than my own. It is wonderful being around the dogs during off leash hours in this town. To see responsible loving owners and healthy happy animals is something that feeds the soul. Watching the way dogs interact and play is delightful. Yakking with the other owners about this and that is good social practice for me. I very much appreciate your writing this. Keep being you. The more advocates for better treatment animals can only help forward peoples awareness of how animal cruelty often shows sadistic behaviours in people. Quick story here: neighbours over back fence are elderly couple with adult developmentally disables daughter who requires caretakers. Well they can't really afford the level of care she needs so they would burn through caretakers frequently. The worst were the mother and son from hell. The little boy (ten maybe?) would rip apart the back fence and scream at my ex and myself "hey neighbour...are you afraid of me neighbour?". Then this beast of a child begins shooting neighbourhood cats. It was realized when more than three posters of missing cats went up within two weeks........then neighbour on side who shares fence with both me and house from hell witnessed the demon child shooting her cat one morning!!! Can you imagine??? The mother had been embezzling from the poor elderly couple. It took all of the neighbours banding together to confront the elderly couple and make them evict these evil people from our vicinity. That kid will end up in our justice system no doubt! Ugh. Thank god that is becomming a more distant memory each day. You take care too sweetie. --zh |

Hi everyone,
This is an update on that case of neglect I spoke of, the woman who had the dog so badly ungroomed, filthy with a bad eye infection, Animal Control stopped by my home today doing the dog license census, and told me he did indeed visit that woamn with the farm/fruit stand, and gave her a warning and for her to have the dog groomed, cleaned and proof (vet invoice) that the dog was taken care of and the eye infection is being treated, the point of this story, it is important to report to any authorities rather it is animal neglectabuse or child abuse/neglect, the squeekiest wheel gets the most grease" . . . well sometimes. Hope to hear more success stories along this line, gee, I am like Animal Planet's Animal Cops "wanna be", just joking. Love to y'all, DE In giving advice seek to help, not please your friend SOLON

I'm a little late to this thread. But odd thing, as I was reading it, my dog, who was fast asleep in the other room, picked this moment to come in the office for some love. Like she knew the topic of what I was reading....
Also, once when my hubby and I were driving to our soon to be sold house to pick up some papers on our way to the closing, we witnessed a van hit a collie pup. We stopped and the driver of the van stopped. There was no one home, but there were also 2 other dogs outside who kind of stayed away from the pup and from us. This poor dog had a broken hip, and was scared and whimpering, but also not afraid of us. We happened to have our own dog's kennel in our car, as she was at the vet and we were going to pick her up later that afternoon. The man who hit the pup took our kennel and we gently helped the dog into it so that he could drive it to the vet. We left a note on the door of the house so that the owners would know what happened. Later, when we went to get our dog and the kennel, we found out that the pup had been claimed, and was going to be transferred to his own vet's later that day. I'm so glad of the outcome for this. It was so hard to see the poor dog, so trusting in our ability to help, yet in pain. Hopefully someone someday will do something similar if our dog (God forbid) ever is in trouble. (((((((zen and her caring heart))))))) gg

Even a somwhat neglected dog that gets fed right and has a large fenced yard to roam in doesn't get that bad. A dog in such sad condition must have been kept very badly, like chained on a 2-foot chain or such. I never have my dogs groomed professionaly, and they look just fine

Groomed professionally or not, a dog full of fleas, sores, infected eye, stench, late rabies vaccines, indeed is a sign of neglect, no excuse for this, sorry, if one can have all this property, especially with the high taxes it costs to have that, her fancy SUV, etc. there is NO excuse to neglect any animal this way, I guess one had to be there to see what passer bys and I found roaming along a busy road, what kind of parents do people that take such poor care of their pets and livestock make? Sorry, gang I will not go further, my opion in my heart, being a pet owner, is there is no excuse, either you put your kids and pets before your luxuries or do not have them or offer them up to people capable of giving the right environment to them. Period. The end.
I do not accept excuses like "we can't afford it, allergies, etc." There ARE NO EXCUSES. Don't hate me for my opinion, I have seen so much nonsense with animals and kids in my day I have had enough lame excuses. Okay, other than that, Bless you kind hearts that take care of our animal friends and are good parents to you kids ![]() "me" In giving advice seek to help, not please your friend SOLON

I have also an incredible love and devotion to our Animal Kingdom, have a pet myself, and have taken in many rescues, there is nothing I won't do do help an animal. I have a beautiful most loving Maine Coon Male of 14.5 years who I love with all of my heart and soul, he is my Son and my family, he at present has Chronic Renal Failure and we pray that he will be with us for many years to come, this is a terrible disease. I have spent most of my savings getting him the best Vet care money can buy, and he has every creature comfort inagineable, he is my world! Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers for I cherish and treasure each and every moment and day I have with him.
When I read your story about the Husky and about the Collie I had tears in my eyes to hear about the love, compassion and empahty you have shown those animals, God Bless you, the world needs more people like this. I am so delighted that you called Animal Control Services, these types should never be allowed to have animals, and it so disturbs me to think of any Animal being owned by people like this. If she can afford a brand new SUV then she can afford to take care of her animal, that should be her first and foremost priority. You know I have always thought that the way a person treats an animal is the way they will treat a child, to even think of these people with children is so disturbing as well. Animals show such incredibly unconditional love, and are always there for you, they are God's gift to mankind. I couldn't even think of not having an animal to share my life with. Where I live, the Humane Society and SPCA are incredibly strict about who can have an animal, you have to fill out many many forms and prove your worthiness to be a recipient of their special love, this brings great comfort knowing that these animals will go to good and loving homes, that should always be the only way someone should be ever allowed to have an animal in my opinion. You brought such a smile to my face for all you have done to help these animals during a terribly sad time for me, after recently losing my Aunt and losing my Maine Coon's 2 brothers last year, all of them filled my life with a love so beautiful and rare. I have a memorial garden for my 2 beloved loving cats/Sons that passed on last year and light candles there in their honour, and a shrine in my house devoted to my Aunt, it brings great comfort to me, and I know that love lives with me and gives me strength to carry on. It is so very heartwarming to know that there are others out there who love animals as I do, and those are the ones I want most to know and share company with. There are people who have no idea and no concern whatsoever what the love of an animal is like, and do not understand how my Maine Coon could be my Son, for those people I have no time, they do not understand, and I prefer to spend my time with people who share my love, empathy and compassion for animals. For those who don't care about animals, one day when they need help no one will be there for them, and rightfully so. I have no tolerance for Animal, Child or Elder abuse and if you should be so terribly unfortunate to see it happening, it must always be reported, it is our duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves. God Bless them all! I am pleased to be able to converse with all of you and it is so very heartwarming, and does my heart good to be a part of a group of people here that truly care. Long may you run! Long may the animals run! Blessings, Sadeyedlady |

Gee, thanks, and many blessings to you too
![]() I hope your cat is doing alright, i feel for you, this is a serious condition, but whatever, please realize you are a loving person and have done the best possible. This is so cool to have a forum like this, I enjoy talking with other animal lovers, and you are right about the way people treat animals and then people. Statistics show animal abusers or neglecters also do the same to their kids, wives, etc. Sad, that the laws aren't stricter. Anyway, take care and thanks for your kind words ![]() Sincerely, DE In giving advice seek to help, not please your friend SOLON
