Today marks one week since I had to make the decision to put my 14 year old cat down. He was my buddy and I miss him so much. I don't know how to quell this sense of loss that is so overwhelming without him. He was always with me, always wanting to be with me, meeting me at the door when I'd come home. When we took him to the vet the first time, xrays showed either lung cancer or congestive heart failure (he had fluid in the lungs) and gave us medicine to clear it. Several days later another xray was taken, the fluid had partially dried up, with this the vet could see what was going on more clearly and said it's not cancer it's congestive heart failure. I was somewhat relieved. On the next visit, the xray showed it was cancer. So I had to switch direction from heart failure which could be controlled with meds and now, cancer, with a poor prognosis. He didn't eat for 2 weeks and was having real breathing problems. I knew it was time, but the decision was ripping me apart because I don't like playing God. I feel like he was taken from me too quickly.

I don't believe there is anything more painful than the loss of a precious pet. I am so, so sorry.

@CANDC Many thanks for asking how it goes day to day. Well, I still cry multiple times a day, still feel so empty, and keep wishing it wasn't all true. It's been very hard, I miss him terribly and am so angry that he was taken from me .At times I'll think I see him and realize quickly that I'm just so used to seeing him around the house. I'm still early on in the grief process. I can't even remove anything that pertained to him- his little bed, cans of cat food, etc. My husband is also becoming a bit annoyed because I'm 'not over it yet". I could go on and on but that gives the picture pretty well. I really loved him.Thank you so so much

I hear you @riptide53 - other people who have not grieved deeply think one just flips a switch. It is not that easy.
What I did with cat food is gave them to an animal shelter or the food pantry unopened stuff. I use the cat litter that is unused in the garage to sop up spills and I washed the bedding and donated to animal shelter. Keep letting us knowing how this is going.
