I don't like eating, never have... so what I did was I cut my eating down to one small meal a day, I was doing that for years and was doing fine like it... but about 6 months ago my doctor dx me with Pre-Diabetes, he asked what was going on so I told him what I was doing... he was not happy at all and said that I now have to eat every 3 hours so my body can get what it needs.
![]() I don't want to see the doctor again so I was wondering if anyone here knows if it would be ok if I just ate once a day like before and got those drinks like Glucerna or Ensure Plus to have every 3 hours?

Maybe try eating a small snack with the shakes. Your body sometimes need different sugars. I am also in a pre- diabetes stage. If you feel like your sugar is dropping in between meals try orange juice. It works well to help maintain glucose levels. You might find that you dont need to eat every 3 hours. My Doc told me that too but I found that by eating a small snack and a health shake I can go about 5 hours with out needing to eat again. You just have to see how your body reacts to different things. Hope this info helped.

My sugar is drops all the time, the lowest I've been was 1.2, I thought I was dieing that time... I have been eating little things but I don't like too, some days I go with eating nothing at all because I'm not hungry... the longest I can go without food is two days but I have to drink lots of stuff like orange juice and apple juice... if I could get away with it I would just drink the health shakes and not eat at all.

It can be difficult to make yourself eat but it will be better in the long run. Do you have a freind or family that could go with you and just try all kinds of new foods. The shakes are nice but not enough. If you like the shakes maybe try adding yogurt or ice cream to them.

Why not experiment with different fruits and veggies.
Grilled or roasted veggies are awesome. Fresh fruits in season are nutrutious and delicious. Your body needs carbs for energy. It serious sounds as if you have an eating disorder. Perhaps you ought to seek help here. Sounds like you *may* need more than a forum board can give. Best wishes. Please let us know how you're doing. We care. ![]() Peace!

Hi JayS.
Do you get education in Canada when you are diagnosised with pre-diabetese? Me, too, just got the word about pre-diabetese. I have 4 classes to attend. The first one I've done already and have 3 more to do over the next 3 months. They have all sorts of people there to teach you about how to prevent diabetes. Diatitian: to help eat what I need and portion control. Mental health people to help you with "goals" for example, my 2 goals are to eat less startchy vegetables like corn and peas and eat fresh veggies as much as possible right now. My next goal is to exercise by walking at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes. A physical therapist who talked to the class about getting the right amount of exercise and how long it takes to burn off a McDonald's hamburger and french fries.... A diabetic nurse who talked about what diabetes really is and how it will continue to make your health decline if you don't do steps to prevent it. My next class is about using my glucose meter...so I see how foods I eat cause different blood sugars and then how to correct my diet. I do know juice in bottles and cans isn't good for you if you are pre-diabetic because it is pasturized and usually has way to much added sugar, corn syurp or sweetner of some sort. Fresh squeezed or like you do to make smoothies is "probably better", but I'm no doctor, just learning how to do correct eatting myself right now. I agree with others who wrtoe to you about this. You seem to need help with you current eatting program. and you need to have all most all the food groups in you every day diet, proteins, and healthy fats, and fiber. Not just fruits and veggies that are mixed in the blender. You don't want to get the complications of diabetes to cause major organ damage, and that is what will happen. Good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing with taking care of yourself. We care and are here tohelp support you. |

No one *wants* to get fat, Jay.
But, most people do not go without eating. Most people do not simply drink their meals every day. And most people do not go days without eating anything. I am not trying to offend you, Jay. I *am* sincerely concerned about your health. Your doctor is telling you to eat more Because you need to in order to stay healthy, And to LIVE! You can do serious damage to your body. Perhaps permanent damage. And even the ultimate damage, If you continue on this course. You are not getting the nutrients you need to survive this way. I know that you don't want to hear these words. Denial is hard to overcome. And I'm telling you this with concern and passion, Not to control you. I don't have that power. But, you matter! You are worthy! You deserve more than you are giving yourself. Be good to your body. Be good to you. We care about you. ![]() Peace!

You asked what organ damage can happen. Well, a simple google search turned up this. The source is at the end.
Damage due to eating disorders: Some Symptoms: Amenorrhea - loss of menstrual cycle. Barrett's Esophagus - associated with Cancer of the esophagus and caused by Esophageal Reflux, this is a change in the cells within the esophagus. Blood Sugar Level Disruptions- Low Blood Sugar- can indicate problems with the liver or kidneys and can lead to neurological and mental deterioration. Elevated Blood Sugar- can lead to diabetes, liver and kidney shut down, circulatory and immune system problems. Callused fingers - caused by repeated using the fingers to induce vomiting. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome -crippling fatigue related to a weakened immune system. Cramps, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, incontinence - increased or decreased bowel activity. Death- caused by any of the following or any combination of the following: heart attack or heart failure; lung collapse; internal bleeding, stroke, kidney failure, liver failure; pancreatitis, gastric rupture, perforated ulcer, depression and suicide. Dehydration - caused by lack of intake of fluids in the body. Dental Problems- decalcification of teeth, erosion of tooth enamel, and severe decay. Gum Disease -caused by stomach acids and enzymes from vomiting; lack of vitamin D and calcium, and hormonal imbalance. Depression - mood swings and depression caused by physiological factors such as electrolyte imbalances, hormone and vitamin deficiencies, malnutrition and dehydration. Living with the Eating Disorder behaviors can cause depression. Depression can also lead the victim back into the cycle of the Eating Disorder (or may have initially been the problem before the onset of the ED). Stress within family, job and relationships can all be causes. There are also a percentage of people born with a pre-disposition to depression, based on family history. Diabetes - high blood sugar as a result of low production of insulin. This can be caused by hormonal imbalances, hyperglycemia or chronic pancreatitis. Digestive Difficulties - a deficiency in digestive enzymes will lead to the body's inability to properly digest food and absorb nutrients. This can lead to mal-absorption problems, malnutrition and electrolyte imbalances. Dry Skin and Hair, Brittle Hair and Nails, Hair Loss - caused by Vitamin and Mineral deficiencies, malnutrition and dehydration Edema - swelling of the soft tissues as a result of excess water accumulation. Most common in the legs and feet of Compulsive Overeaters and in the abdominal area of Anorexics and/or Bulimics (can be caused by Laxative and Diuretic use). Electrolyte Imbalances - electrolytes are essential to the production of the body's "natural electricity" that ensures healthy teeth, joints and bones, nerve and muscle impulses, kidneys and heart, blood sugar levels and the delivery of oxygen to the cells. Bad Circulation, Slowed or Irregular Heartbeat, Arrhythmias, Angina, Heart Attack - There are many factors associated with having an Eating Disorder that can lead to heart problems or a heart attack. Sudden cardiac arrest can cause permanent damage to the heart, or instant death. Electrolyte imbalances (especially potassium deficiency), dehydration, malnutrition, low blood pressure, extreme orthostatic hypotension, abnormally slow heart rate, electrolyte imbalances, and hormonal imbalances call all cause serious problems with the heart. Esophageal Reflux - Acid Reflux Disorders - partially digested items in the stomach, mixed with acid and enzymes, regurgitates back into the esophagus. This can lead to damage to the esophagus, larynx and lungs and increases the chances of developing cancer of the esophagus and voice box. Gastric Rupture - spontaneous stomach erosion, perforation or rupture. High Blood Pressure, Hypertension - elevated blood pressure exceeding 140 over 90. Can cause: blood vessel changes in the back of the eye creating vision impairment; abnormal thickening of the heart muscle; kidney failure; and brain damage. Hyperactivity - manic behavior; not being able to sit still. Impaired Neuromuscular Function - due to vitamin and mineral deficiencies and malnutrition. Infertility - the inability to have children; caused by loss of menstrual cycle, and hormonal imbalances. Malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies can also make it impossible to succeed with a full-term pregnancy, and can increase the chances significantly of a baby born with birth defects. Insomnia - having problems falling and/or staying asleep. Iron Deficiency, Anemia - this makes the oxygen transporting units within the blood useless and can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, increased infections, and heart palpitations. Kidney Infection and Failure - kidneys cleanse the poisons from your body, regulate acid concentration and maintain water balance. Vitamin Deficiencies, dehydration, infection and low blood pressure increase the risks of and associated with kidney infection thus making permanent kidney damage and kidney failure more likely. Lanugo - (soft downy hair on face, back and arms). This is caused due to a protective mechanism built-in to the body to help keep a person warm during periods of starvation and malnutrition, and the hormonal imbalances that result. Liver Failure - the liver aids in removing waste from cells, and aids in digestion. Fasting and taking acetaminophen (drug found in over-the-counter painkillers) increases your risks for Liver damage and failure. Loss of menstruation and dehydration (putting women at risk for too much iron in their system), and chronic heart failure can lead to liver damage or failure. Low Blood Pressure, Hypotension - caused by lowered body temperature, malnutrition and dehydration. Can cause heart arrythmias, shock or myocardial infarction. Lowered body temperature - caused by loss of healthy insulating layer of fat and lowered blood pressure. Malnutrition - caused by undereating or overeating. Malnutrition indicates deficiency for energy, protein and micronutrients (e.g. vitamin A, iodine and iron) either singularly or in combination. It can cause severe health risks including (but not limited to) respiratory infections, kidney failure, blindness, heart attack and death. Mallory-Weiss tear - associated with vomiting, a tear of the gastroesophageal junction. Muscle Atrophy - wasting away of muscle and decrease in muscle mass due to the body feeding off of itself. Orthostatic Hypotension - sudden drop in blood pressure upon sitting up or standing. Symptoms include dizziness, blurred vision, passing out, heart pounding and headaches. Osteoporosis - thinning of the bones with reduction in bone mass due to depletion of calcium and bone protein, predisposing to fractures. Osteopenia - below normal bone mass indicating a calcium and/or vitamin D deficiency and leading to Osteoporosis. Hormone imbalance/deficiencies associated with the loss of the menstrual cycle can also increase your risks of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia. Pancreatitis - when the digestive enzymes attack the pancreas; caused by repeated stomach trauma, alcohol consumption or the excessive use of laxatives or diet pills. Peptic Ulcers - caused by increased stomach acids, cigarette smoking, high consumption of caffeine or alcohol. Pregnancy problems - including potential for high-risk pregnancies, miscarriage, still born babies and death or chronic illnesses from minor to severe, in children born (all due to malnutrition, dehydration, vitamin and hormone deficiencies). Swelling - in face and cheeks (following self-induced vomiting) Seizures - increased risk of seizures in Anorexic and Bulimic individuals may be caused by dehydration. It is also possible that lesions on the brain caused by long-term malnutrition and lack of oxygen-carrying cells to the brain may play a role. Tearing of Esophagus - caused by self-induced vomiting TMJ "Syndrome" - degenerative arthritis within the tempero-mandibular joint in the jaw (where the lower jaw hinges to the skull) creating pain in the joint area, headaches, and problems chewing and opening/closing the mouth. Vitamin deficiencies and teeth grinding (often related to stress) can both be causes. Weakness and Fatigue - caused generalized poor eating habits, electrolyte imbalances, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, depression, malnutrition, heart problems. http://www.edreferral.com/consequences_of_ed.htm There are many, as you can see. I hope this will now get your attention. You *must* eat to survive. Peace!

I agree with Heygimm,
You do need a doctor. If you are uncomfortable with the one you have already seen, Go to one who specializes in eating disorders. They are well versed in the problems associated with these issues and can help. Please don't try to overcome this by yourself. You deserve the help that is available to you, friend. Here's a link to help you get started, http://www.pale-reflections.com/default.asp But, please, do consult another physician who can help. We care. ![]() Peace!

My friend Dawn has been living on nothing but liquid and aspirin for ages and she is very healthy... she want's to be a model but the place said she was overweight, she is a 102 pounds but they say she has to be a 100 or less.
She say's that I don't need to eat more and to just take vitamins and the health shakes. I looked at that site but I don't think I have that I have a eating disorder because I just don't like eating and nothing more.

Maybe your friend Dawn has a reason to keep her weight down, and is healthy, but you already said you have a lot of the physical issues from that list of complications due to not eating properly. You don't seen healthy to me. "food avoidance" isn't being healthy.
I'm not so sure you friend Dawn is either, plus wy does she need to take an asprin? Has her doctor told her too or is she just taking it because she thinks that is good for her?. Asprin just because it is over the counter isn't something to be taken every day without a doctor telling you to. It is to help prevent a heart attack. I know, because I was told by my doctor I'm at risk because I have chronic kidney disease, problably from a life long use of over the counter drugs like Advil and prescription drugs like Celebrex for headaches and arthrititis. After a while, it (not eating right) catches up with you. You need to tell a doctor JayS. Please. Boy, I really sound bossy, but I'm only stating this with the importance it needs. You are harming yourself by avoiding whole, healthy food. When you make smoothies out of food, it breaks down and changes it. And you are underweight? bless you and take care of yourself we all care here at PC |

Your friend is going to put a hole in her stomach with no food and asprin everyday. She's *not* healthy. An adult is not supposed to weigh 100 pounds unless she's very, very short. And responsible modeling agencies are now rejecting anorexic models because of their effect on young children and their lack of health - to put it frankly they are sick and they die.
You know the facts Jay. Get to a doctor before it's too late. I've nothing to add anymore, because to argue with you only makes you argue your false position that you are doing good for yourself. You're not. The last thing I will say is that we do care. Be well... Peace!

Hi Jay,
What is your height and weight? Do you know your BMI? Also... do you exercise regularly? Usually Diabetes type II or even pre-diabetes that is related to type II is associated with physical inactivity and/or being overweight. |
