Is there a Doctor in the house?

Got to go to work soon so I need a quick response.

My foot/ankle/leg has swollen up like a large grapefruit. I don't recall bashing it. The only pain I have is tenderness going down the front of my leg and foot and yet the swelling is round the ankle. Infact I don't have an ankle at the moment. I'll put a support bandage on it but I am flummoxed to what has caused this. Hope I can put a shoe on!

Grateful for any help, thanks.

I'm not a doctor Peg, but I think you should go to the doctor first, then go to work. My mother used to get blood clots that would cause her ankle to swell up. I don't know if you got bit by a spider and a having an allergic reaction - happened to my daughter with a mosquito bite. Best not to delay going to the doctor. Keep us posted and I hope you feel better.

Oh heck! I haven't the time to go the Doctor and I certainly cannot call in sick.

I have medical books here but they all go on about some sort of injury. If I'd twisted my ankle I'm sure I'd remember how I did it.

Going to try google.

Thanks Lynn.

It's not DVT as I haven't been sitting for a long time and I don't have pain in the calf.

It's not gout.

If I press it, it leaves an indentation but I have tested my blood pressure and that is ok.

I have been walking around a lot so it could be an injury of some sort.

Not been stung by anything or got any cuts.

Trying to diagnose myself here!

Pegasus,

You didn't mention which leg, left or right. When I think of swelling feet/ankle/leg I think congestive heart failure, kidney failure. At least call your doctor and get some sort of help. Keep it up as much as you can to help relieve the swelling/ and pain caused from the swelling. and I don't know what the medicine is that you take so I have no opinion on that. Just my thoughts as I read your thread.

Get better, find out what it is from please.

A neighbor of mine just hit her ankle not hard on the side of a table and ended up getting a massive infection. Maybe infection?

I know it's a bit later on, but if it's not gone down I would certainly say go to you GP. If there is no redness, hot feeling in the area, pain etc it's most likely there is no infection or anything like that. Also if there is no pain it's quite unlikely you've done anything injury wise like you said. It sounds like oedema (edema in the US I think) which can be caused by a few things. Probably best to get the gp to check you over, listen to your heart do a bp on their machine and get it all recorded. In the mean time, raise your feet up when you're sat, make sure you're drinking and eating well (the normal stuff to be healthy) but try not to do too much physical exertion incase you risk making something worse.

Normally I try not to see my GP too often either, but I think in this case it's important

Pegasus, do check in! I know some older people (we're talking 60+) wind up with swollen feet due to capillaries breaking and their ankles swell and it stays that way ... but you're not that old so I doubt that would be a reason!! Here's a few Googled sites.

Thanks everyone for the support.

My foot is still huge and is quite painful. I have it well strapped up and it feels better with a boot on. It is very painful when I try to take the boot off.

I really don't have time to go to the doctors right now and cannot afford to go off sick so I will soldier on for now.

I am thinking that I must have knocked it or strained it, I am on my feet all day, walking up and down corridors. I shall put my foot up as I have a 26 hour shift coming up on Sunday.

Pegasus, I'm so sorry you're having such a problem. Do you have an Urgent Care near you? They are open 24 hours a day. I'm thinking perhaps you can go there when you get off work, but definately before you pull that huge shift.

Does your ankle feel hot? Is it red? Are there any red streaks?

Please take care.

Thanks January.

I showed a colleague my foot, well she had to pull my boot off actually! She said she couldn't see how I could have done such damage and not known how!

There are no red streaks but it is very hot. I have both my feet in warm water right now while I'm typing this! I honestly think I've just overdone it somehow. I'm on my feet all day long and maybe I had a weakness in that foot?

I do know I should go to see a doctor but I honestly don't have time. I shall do as much self care as I can.

Pegasus, I know how extremely intelligent you are so I suspect you know this, but heat is a sign of a blood clot. My Mom has them and what you have described is the way her ankles look and feel and she has blood clots in both of them.

Please, please take good care.

Pegasus, what you describe is not a typical reaction to 'overdoing it'.
A sudden swelling like that should be looked at by a doctor.
You are important--please make the time.
Thanks for this!

Pegasus,

It could be so many things...people don't necessarily have text book symptoms.
I know it's a pain in the rear to see a doctor, but please do see one right away.
I'm very worried for you. I would not take this lightly -- Please take care of yourself and go.

Sending you good vibes...

Peg, check in! This so uncool. We want to know if you are okay cause we worry. I keep picturing that scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail with the knight in the road saying "it's just a flesh wound" as he gets his arms removed in a sword fight. But this...surely by now you know what is wrong?

My best friend has to watch his salt intake because sodium makes his feet and ankles swell (edema, I think it's called). I have no idea why this is.

Sometimes he has to take a diuretic to reduce the swelling.

So, sodium maybe? Hope you go see an actual doc! Doctor Mike

I am taking care of a lady right now and she has an infection in her foot/ankle and its hot/warm because it has an infection in it. Usually heat means there is an infection. I would go get checked out.

It's still fat, may have gone down a little, haven't had time to go to the doctors. I think it is probably a strain/sprain.

Thanks for the support.
