I finally figured out what it was I eating that was making me sick. Appearently I need avoid, of all things, lettuce. At first I thought I was have problems due to all the fiber, but I'm able to eat other greens without problems. It's frustrating to be bothered such a common, innocuous food, and even more frustrating to not know why. I understand having a problem with soy and artificial sweeteners, but have a problem with lettuce, carrots, bananas, figs...

I don't know...
I seem to become sensative to anything I eat for an extended period of time.

Have you tried organic? Perhaps it is a pesticide.

I have actually considered trying to grow something, but that takes time and nothing is really in season right now.

I don't know if it has anything to do with pesticides because I can apples and pears just fine, and all the things that bother me do so any form, raw, cooked or processed.

hi. i suffer from IBS and glucose intolerance (aka, pre-diabetes) and am familiar with some foods. soy is one of the foods i avoid. the other foods you mention tend to be eaten raw. raw foods are hard to digest; i only eat cooked veggies and limit fruit intake (which is also high in sugar) to small amounts, e.g., half an apple. iceburg lettuce is not high in fiber at all but needs to be thoroughly cleaned. other types of lettuce are actually better for you. i find it best to have veggies mixed with an easy on the stomach starch like white rice. that way, i get to eat the vegs i love and they are easier on my stomach and digestive system.

there is no test that can diagnose IBS (irritable bowel syndrome); it's a matter of trial and error with foods, keeping track of what you eat and how it affects you. with IBS, the results will vary. things you ate one day and did not have a problem with will affect you badly the next. generally, if it's IBS, you have to avoid high fiber foods, dairy products and fatty (especially deep fried) foods. good luck to you!

I have tried IBS medications before but they only made things worse. I don't have a problem with dairy or fatty foods (though fatty foods can give me gallbladder pains). It's odd because all of the things that hurt me are all very specific foods in any form; carrots have the same effect on me regardless of whether I eat them raw or cooked (or powdered in one instance).

Do you have Chrones? usually veggies are good for that and IBS but sometimes that is not the case. Glad you figured out what was causing the problem
