I started prozac just over a week ago and I have woken up during the night with my teeth clenched tight. It makes my teeth hurt. I think it is just due to the prozac since I have never noticed a problem before.

Does anybody know if it will go after a while? I have read that Buspar can alleviate it, has anybody found this?

I've heard of this problem with Prozac and Zoloft before. I think it can lead to headaches as well. I've also read that Buspar can bring relief, and that some people will get a dental guard from their dentist. Have you talked to your MD about this yet?

I haven't discussed it with my dr yet, am thinking of discussing it next time I go, which should be in about 2 weeks' time, if I still have it. I too read about the dental guards, but I would rather I didn't need them! I'm hoping this is just a temporarily side effect. A few weeks shouldn't hurt my teeth too much, I'm hoping.

(((((((((((((((( Kimmy )))))))))))))))))) thanks for the support Bruxism

So you did it too, I'm glad to hear it went away after a few weeks, I'm hoping that that will be the case for me too. I don't think I do it a lot, I have woken up several times with my teeth clenched and that's how I know that it happens. I do know it happens every night. I haven't had headaches but it does make my teeth hurt a bit if I close my mouth and press down a little. It's not too bothersome though.

yeah, dental guards aren't the solution, only a way to save you from grinding your teeth down (like I did) and needing additional expensive treatment... but getting to the cause of the problem is how to do it. I hope, if it is the medication, that it stops that! lol or that you will find a med that doesn't cause this! TC Bruxism

and what I meant to add.. was that guards don't help the TMJs at all! In fact, the softer guards create MORE TMJ friction than the hard "splints" made just for you! Don't let it persist, as it can cause joint problems... that might last a lifetime!

I've been having problems with clenching my teeth for a few years now. I've got TMJ. Having a mouth guard helps me tremendously. Saved my teeth from getting worse, and it relaxes my jaw. It is expensive, but it can last a long time.

If you think you'll be clenching your teeth for a long time, then getting a mouth guard is a good idea. Try other meds first, though.

Good luck.

ok I meant to be clearer Bruxism a regular mouth guard like what you pick up in the store that isn't fitted for your mouth, nor the proper heighth to allow your tmj muscles to relax isn't going to help but harm your TMJs in the long run. TMD is a bad disorder to battle... and if you can catch the cause before it happens, that is good... splints, those that are made for you by a DMD or oral surgeon are expensive and yucky at best. Bruxism Sorry to hear you have TMD also (((ss)))

I grind my teeth at night and now wear a night guard which helps a lot. I also catch myself clenching my teeth during the day and whenever I notice that I'm doing that I take a minute to relax my jaw. I can't really wear the mouth guard during the day as it make it difficult to talk. The mouth guard I use came from the dentist and it was costly and not covered by insurance, but it is helping to save my teeth from further damage. Good luck to you.

Thanks Sky, SSand peanuts for your thoughts. I am tentatively hopeful that perhaps it has stopped. I haven't noticed it in the past couple of nights, anyway.
