I had a full physical yesterday, and my Dr. told me I had a bit of wax build up in both ears. She told me to put cooking oil in my ears, alternating ears, for a few nights, and that would clear it up, and I'd hear a lot betterr. um ok. But how much cooking oil, and what's the best way to get it into my ear? i live alone.

Has anyone tried this approach and does it really work?

Thanks.

hi splitimage

you're supposed to use a little syringe, like they supply in ear-waxing kits, so however many mills that holds. you use that to squirt the oil in your ear, keeping your head bend sideways ... so if putting oil in your right ear, bend head far to the left for a few mins. then place a small ball of cotton lightly in the ear to keep any excess oil from spilling out.

i have done this numerous times on docs orders with veg oil, peanut oil etc ... but unfortunately it's never done me any good but with luck it will you. good luck

I haven't tried it, but I actually learned this in med school from one of my profs. So I can vouch for the method. You use just a few drops of oil, and the best way to do it is with a dropper. You can buy a dropper at the drug store. If you can't find a dropper, you can use a syringe (slowly, not with force), or even just pour a tiny bit of oil in the cap and pour it in (although this will make a mess). And you can use any kind of oil you want. Doesn't have to be olive oil.

Do it at night, and put a towel down on your pillow, as the oil will leak out and make a mess.

Hope this helps!

Yes I've heard of this too and you can get one of those liquid droppers they give for kids liquid medication at the pharmacy counter. Tilt your head to one side, like laying your head on a table...put a couple drops and lay like that for a couple minutes. Avoid using QTips since these can shove and compact ear wax. I know some people love QTips and they're fine for just the outside of the ear canal. Some people also have more of a tendency for this condition.

Ok - thanks a bunch everyone for the responses. Makes me feel much better. I'll stop by the drugstore and pick up a dropper thingy.
