For as long as I can remember I have never been able to burp. I know it may sound a little strange to even question this, but every one I know can burp except me. I even asked my doctor and she said she doesn't know. It baffles me and everyone around me to be honest. It only bothers me a little bit but mostly for the reason that I have no idea why I have the inability to burp. I really don't know if it could be a medical problem or psychological problem or just a weird thing, but I would appreciate it greatly if someone might have some info.

The inability to burp must be painful. Can you burp when you yawn?

Many conditions can cause this, such as GERD, hiatal hernias, Schatzki Ring/Syndrome, IBS, etc... Stress can also cause esophageal spasms and other problems.
Thanks for this!

I find that very attractive in a person. I would ALMOST rather a person pass gas than burp. Once they start burping in front of you, you know the honeymoon is over!

I rarely burp either BipolarGirl and wish I could. My oldest daughter is just like me and we only do it once in a while. My youngest can burp very easily ....even on command lol. I think Didgee Eeyou may be on the right track because me / oldest daughter have reflux esophagitis ...so I'm thinking its because the opening at the bottom is too relaxed and not enough pressure to release a burp. This isn't fact and just my speculation.

Interesting that you see not burping as a problem. I rarely burp - maybe 2x a year - and they are involuntary burps. I don't see it as a problem. There are other ways one's body can expel excess gas namely, breaking wind. If you do not burp but are breaking wind then my educated guess is that you are healthy!

It's not much of a problem, I just find it unusual... You know what I mean?

Yeah. Still, I don't think it's anything to worry about. You might raise the subject at your next MD appointment just to put your mind at rest.

Sounds like your secondary peristaltic wave doesn't work right I hope it is not too uncomfortable for you too often. I was reading where others with the condition have a lot of pain, can't drink soda or other carbonated drinks, etc.

I didn't even know I could put this on the list! cos "CAN'T burp" is very different from "DOESN'T burp like an ahole". honestly you made my day, girl AND guy. there may be happiness for me yet.

Not to worry, Hankster, it could be worse; my husband has 3 brothers and 3 sons; the women in the family have no chance in the burping/farting department!

Haha yea probably not but I have brought it up at my last MD appointment and they said they didn't know. :/ It could have something to do with the fact that I have a habit of filtering soda through my teeth (Or at least thats's what my friend Kyle said, haha).
