whining warning!

I posted in the social forum about an emergency trip to the dentist Wednesday. I have a abcess from a broken tooth. He did a root canal, put antibiotic in the abcess and put me on oral antibiotics. The bad boy abcess broke through my gum last night and is draining - blech!

My jaw is still swollen and hurts like holy *heck*. I feel like poo. I hurt. I'm worn out feeling. I'm cranky.

I'm doing everything the doctor told me to do plus some home remedies - salt water rinse, ice packs, teabag to draw the crud out, resting...

I'M SICK OF THIS *DANGED* THING HURTING!!!! I WANT IT TO GO AWAY NOW!!!!!

Anyone know how long it should take for the pain and swelling to go down after starting antibiotics? Maybe if I had some idea when this will be over it would be easier to cope with.

+++++++

Poking around on the web gave me the info that the swelling should start to go down after three days of antibiotics. I started 'em Wednesday night to I guess that means late Saturday or Sunday before it starts to go down. great....

That is really strange....maybe I am the strange one because most of my teeth have broken off because of the lack of enamel.....hardly have any teeth to chew with now.....& have not had one abcess in any of the 20+ broken teeth.....maybe I better not say anything here...lol.....I know as soon as I say this......that's the first thing that will happen.......but this has been going on for over 5 years now & I don't have dental insurance & medicare won't pay because it doesn't involve my jaw (TMJ).......so I am SOL when it comes to having all my teeth pulled & getting dentures right now because I don't want to get into any debt that is above my ability to pay.

I am so sorry you are hurting so bad......I can really feel for you even though I don't hurt....just the nuisance of my teeth, I can relate to anyone who is having teeth problems

Thanks Eskie. Don't tempt fate saying you haven't had an abscess. I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

I sympathize. Had an infection from a hidden cavity a while back. Incredible cold sweat and nausea type pain. Feel better soon.

IDK about this. I've had 2 abcesses & 2 root canals.
Two days out & I was feeling some better.
Not what you are describing at all. Pain pills helping?
Don't suffer too long, consider calling dentist if pain isn't better tomorrow (Sat).

Hope you're better very soon.

I'm very susceptible to abcesses so I can really relate! I've had all kinds of them, and my teeth are in very bad shape. For years I didn't go to a dentist because I was sexually abused by one!!!

I finally went to one a couple of years ago and I trust him completely and he's getting them back in shape.

But usually it takes me about 3 days after beginning antibiotics for the swelling to go down. (and the pain to stop too) The pain STARTS to disappear in about 2 days so that's not too bad.

I hope you're feeling better. This is no fun! There's nothing I hate more than a toothache! It makes my whole head hurt, plus my neck too. So keep us posted and let us know when you feel better. God bless & take care. Hugs, Lee

sorry, gotta whine some.....

The pain is less and the swelling is going down, but it still hurts. I have to eat squishy foods because chewing makes it hurt worse. My gum started bleeding tonight. I don't know if that's a bad thing.

I'm just tired of the whole mess and want it to go away.

Still too much going on for my comfort, if in your shoes.
Might need to check in with dentist today.
Know you're sick of this & want to get better
Sending you healing thoughts.

*sigh*

Went back to the dentist yesterday so he could finish working on the tooth. The abscess was still there, smaller, but still there. He took out the temp filling he put in last week and drained the abscess best he could. He was not able to finish working on the tooth. He didn't want to permenantly seal the tooth while the abscess was active.

He gave me another ten days of anti-biotic and sent me on my way.

The danged thing hurts like an SOB again from him rooting around in it yesterday. I'm back to eatin mushy food as a result. Bought a blender last night so I can eat something other than pudding, mashed taters and yogurt.

Oh, lizardlady, so sorry for all the pain. Advil/Tylenol or nothing helps? I did the dentist for my 6 months' cleaning yesterday and have 3 crowns that need redoing; he was warning me about doing them before the tooth underneath starts hurting and causes me to need a root canal. But I'm not in the mood to spend $1200 right at the moment, each. I made an appointment for when I have my next cleaning, in March next year and hope the first one I'm having done waits that long.

LL-
I'm sorry about your tooth. I hate mouth problems. You can take tylenol along with your ibprofen for the pain since they have different methods of action (as long as you don't have some other reason you can't take it). I hope everything clears up soon.
Thanks for this!
