Every once in a great while I take my fluoxetine right before bed and it doesn't go down all the way. It feels like they are stuck in the top part of my stomach and dissolving there and eating away at my esophagus. I took the medicine at 10:40pm and it's 1:00am and I'm just with chest pain and discomfort. I know it from the pills.
I tried to eat a little to help them down but I just feel sick and it's painful. I drank a little but still it isn't helping. Any suggestions? Not life threatening...but still painful and annoying. Idk what to do- it actually woke me up it hurts so badly. |

Hi doggiedo,
I have the same problem with taking my pills at night, for some reason. I'd advise you to place your pill/s in a scoop or two of applesauce or pudding, to help you get it down. That's what they do at nursing homes when patients are having difficulty swallowing pills. If that doesn't work for you, then you need to crush your pills and then mix them with applesauce or pudding & it tastes pretty bad then! Let's hope that the simple mixture of whole pills mixed with smoothness will fix the problem. *knock on wood!*

Stuck pills are awful, especially some types. Once I actually accidentally melted a pill on my kitchen counter and i swept it off with my hand, and I got a chemical burn on my finger!
Once in the stomach, the acid will take care of things. You don't need a whole pill to be stuck before, you only need some residue to be stuck to suffer a lot. Because your esophagus is pretty sensitive. Can go on for hours before you feel normal again. I can't imagine having that pain every day! Ugh. When you swallow other things, that go well? Have other issues like esophageal spasms, heartburn or that stuff? Having that of a hard time every day is not really normal. I assume you tried to really gulp the pill down with a lot of fluid? |

I would just suggest that you make sure you are drinking a full glass of water when taking any medication. This will help wash it all the way through the esophagus, to the stomach.
I sympathize with you - it's painful when they get stuck! |

I have some tablets which i take every six hours, they are huge and always get stuck unless i crunch them up into a spoon of jam then drink a load of water. DO NOT lay down or slouch when taking meds sit or stand as straight as possible to help them go down. if you get a burning sensation after a while, it could be acid so try taking an antacid tablet to neutralise it.

I might try the pudding thing tonight. I just hate that feeling. It's only once in a great while when that happens. I almost feel like the medicine is eating away at my esophagus! Silly, but it's what it feels like it! Argh, times like at makes me think I never want to take medicine ever again. Stupid thought, but it's such a pain to deal wight this junk. Ugh, I'm tired. I should just go to bed. Thanks for the advice guys.

Folks, do NOT take antacids to releiver burning from meds. The antacid blocks the uptake of the med.
Doggiedo, like others suggested try eating something before you take your pills, drink a whol glass of water and don't lay down for a little bit after you take them. For the pills that seem to get "stuck" going down, what about coating it with a little cooking oil to help it go down? |

I hate that feeling and know it can be really painful. I agree with Shezbut that to take it with something: yogurt, pudding or applesauce can help them to go down and help your stomach so it is not so empty; then not to lie down soon afterward or might mean needing to take them earlier in the evening such as with dinner, or just earlier than when currently taking them with some form of food. As Lizardlady mentions, antacids at the same time will block the uptake of some meds and should be taken at a different time if needed. I would try taking it with some food first to see if that helps. Hope you find what works best for you!

Hi! For what it's worth to you, you might want to start taking B12 tablets. My sisters and I all have a swallowing problem whether it's food or pills. The doctor said it's a vitamin B12 deficiency. We all take the pills or inject ourselves now and it really helps! Once in a while we have a problem but not much anymore as long as we take the B12. The applesauce thing sounds good though.

Fluoxetine comes in capsule and tablet form, so check which form you have. If they're tablets, then don't crush them if they are administered weekly due to the enteric coating being compromised. Non-weekly fluoxetine tablets are film/sugar coated, so compromising the coating is going to have a minor or unnoticed effect.
