I have ulcerative colitis and am currently not having a flare- as seen in my colonoscopy two weeks ago. I was battling a bacterial infection, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence of that being the cause of the incontinence either.

Yet, here is am, 34 years old, otherwise healthy, and when I pass gas, I often experience in continence. It's horribly embarrassing and I don't know what to do about it.

I do have a GI doc, but she can't seem to figure out what's going on. They have done blood work, a colonoscopy, and everything looks fine.

I was on vacation last week and this week , so luckily I've been hanging around the house. Idk what I'm going to do when I go back to work next week. I refuse to believe this is par for the course at my age, 34! It's embarrassing and ridiculous!

I could be that your **** spinchter (sp?) is not working as well as it did. The muscles.....Possibly all your problems over the years have affected it. My guess, anyway.

I'm sure it is upsetting, but just wear a pad just in case would be my suggestion.
Thanks for this!

Have you heard about Kegel exercises for pelvic floor muscles; well there is the same thing for rectal muscles (I cannot remember what they are called though) to tighten the sphincter muscles. Practice tightening this muscle, tighten the muscle as if you were trying to hold it in and to not go, clenching them, several times throughout the day and can be one thing that might be able to help with incontinence if this is what is causing it.

Something that can help for ulcerative colitis or even if suspect that there still might be a bacterial infection that the G/ENT doc recommended is adding, if have not already, yogurts with live and active bacterial cultures such as what is found in true Greek yogurts or Activia; there should be at least 2 to preferably 3 -4 cultures in the yogurt. This can help restore the balance in the intestinal tract, and will also help too to cut down on the gas as well.

Yes, I'd figure out what I thought was going on, experiment with my food and exercise:
