Hello all,

I thought it would be a good idea to post about this since it seems to be the time of year of transitions... things like flu season, spring allergies or coming out of seasonal depression.

Just a quick rundown: I'm 23, I manage 3 mental disorders. ADD, Gen. Anxiety Disorder, and Long Term Clinical Depression/Dysthymia.

Recently I had been under more strain than usual. I've been getting frequent headaches, feeling even more tired than usual and felt like I was either dealing with a cold or allergies. Yet despite the meds and remedies I took to relieve my symptoms... they seemed to have little to no effect. I was pretty miserable... not only feeling sick but also it just added more fuel to my disorders.
After putting up with the sneezing and headaches for a few weeks, I began to suspect I may be dealing something slightly more serious. Especially since I began to notice the snot from my sneezing began to have traces of blood in it. This lead me to believe I had developed a sinus infection. I went to an Urgent Care and was given antibiotics that I started last night. Today I feel immensely better, which seems to confirm the theory.

So, the moral of the story is... it's important to maintain your physical health while dealing with your mental health. Disorders like Depression and Anxiety typically tend to weaken your immune system. And since it's peak flu and allergy season, you could be at risk of actually developing something serious. Even if you deal with say.. conversion disorder, anxiety sickness, etc... It may develop into the real thing.
It's immensely important to take care of yourself physically if you want to manage yourself mentally. Listen to your body! Even if you have a history of being paranoid of illness or be a hypochondriac, you should never be ashamed of getting yourself checked out. Better to be safe than sorry.

Even if the doctor you see can't find anything wrong, you can still take steps for yourself. Take vitamins & over the counter meds for symptoms, practice good hygiene, attempt to go to bed a little early, simple exercise like a walk for 15-20 min, write down or type up your symptoms/how you feel for the day in a brief summary. Hell, get a second opinion from another provider. Like if you not sure about what your PCP told you, you could do what I did head to a Urgent Care or a Walk-In Clinic.

Remember, Mind and Body are linked... one will affect the other. So make sure to take care of yourself!

I agree completely! It appears I may have a pinched nerve or slipped disk in my back. My doc scheduled me an appointment with a physical therapist tomorrow. I wasn't going to go because "it's not that bad." But when I can't walk or sleep and even sitting hurts, it probably is bad enough to get help.

Not being able to work sucks because we need the income, but if I don't take care of myself could make things much worse long term.

Thank you for the reminder.

Yes. I think I may be pre diabetic. I'm terrified, but in May I'll go to MDs to be checked. I'm also behind on colonoscopy. And the ECT raised my blood pressure.

I'm going to try TCM , I got a referral to an accupunture clinic.
