This has been going on for a week - it hurts like hell! I got it done at the pharmacy (mistake!!!!!!!). Been taking a ton of aspirin and putting ice on it - doesn't seem to be helping much.... Went to the doctor and he said take aspirin and put ice on it (really!!!!! Big help ((((((() Hope it stops because it limits my already dormant lifestyle. Physical and mental stuff - great

Exact same thing happened to me a couple years ago. I don't know if they hit a nerve (literally) or if I reacted badly to something in the vaccine or what happened, exactly. The pain lasted for about three weeks before it finally subsided. Wish I had more insights and suggestions to offer you. Hope you feel better soon. *hugs*

Sorry you are hurting. I hate getting flu shots !

One year my stupid arm hurt for a long time. Hope you feel better soon. Being told to use ice and aspirin is annoying, but there's not really much else to do.

It's irritating when you think you are doing something healthy for yourself & it ends up with this kind of reaction.

Could be they hit the muscle wrong since theybare IM (inter muscular) shots, or hit a nerve.....or it could be a reaction to either what it's mixed with or the flu viruses themselves.

The flu virus is inactivated (not a live virus) so as not to cause the flu. Many flu vaccines have the virus grown inside fertilized chicken eggs or in animal cells (newer Flucelvax vaccine).

Preservatives which can cause reactions are thimerosal (protecting against bacteria & fungi)..it contains mercury at a small dose they say isn't toxic at that dose....can get thimerosal-free version.

Stabilizers Sucrose (table sugar), sorbitol (artificial sweetener), & MSG (mono sodium glutamate - flavor enhancer) keep the vaccines stable....keep them from losing potency even when exposed to heat or light. They claim the amounts are too small to have any effect (ya, ya)

Antibiotics neomycin, gentamicin or others to stop bacteria from contaminating the vaccine.

Polysorbate 80 an emulsifier that keeps all ingredients evenly distributed.

Formaldehyde used to inactivate the virus toxins..mostly removed but trace levels remain supposedly many times lower than what is naturally(?) found in the human body.

Serious side effects are:
Trouble breathing or wheezing
Swelling of eyes lips or tongue (one of my allergic reactions to an antibiotic was swollen tongue)
Hives
Weakness
Fast heartbeat
Dizziness

Mild reactions are considered to be
Tenderness, redness, swelling around the shot location
Fever
Fatigue
Headache
(dang, I wouldn't accept the last 3 especially as being ok either)

If they hit a nerve you could be feeling it for months the not at the intensity you art feeling it now. I would use heat & ice (if there is inflammation ice will help). I would say at least a week. I also have a favorite ointment I put on bruises & sore muscles. Learned about it for horses but works amazing on people & pharmacies carry it now....called Arnica gel. I swear by it. Rub that on the whole upper arm where you got the shot. I swear by it because I whacked my shin on my dishwasher door & had a lump about 2 inches around & 3/4 in high. Put the arnica gel on it & watched the swelling go down.....t was shocked to see that....& never got black & blue either. Also put it on my face after major oral surgery. Me whole bottom part of my face was black & blue. The black & blue went away In 3 days. I do a lot of work on my farm & always getting sore muscles. Helps with that & cramps in my legs when sleeping. I have rubbed it on my legs & the cramps eased off to nothing. If I hadn't PERSONALLY had such good experience I would never recommend it. It could relieve this problem for you much sooner than just heat & ice & aspirin.....actually if you can take ibuprofen, it's a better anti-inflamitory than .

I have a retired pharmacist friend who has really helped me knowing what to use for what now I live alone I so appreciate his input along with natural healing things I've learned due to my horrible side effects to meds.

Thank you for the recommendation, eskielover. I'm going to get my flu shot sometime this month and will keep that in mind if the same thing happens to me again.

I'm 64 & have refused to have a flu shot since I was 17. Back they they used live virus & I got so sick after the shot I swore NEVER AGAIN. I have never gotten the flu in all these years. No have been sick with bronchitis & had pneumonia but it was never from a flu virus.

The last 10 years since moving to my farm I've been sick 3 times & this last cold was so mild I almost didn't recognize it as a cold. My stress level went down when I moved here & so did my illnesses. Country living has definitely been healthy for me.

Lol my friend is a retired head pharmacist of one of our local pharmacies....he was always pushing their flu shots I graciously declined. I'll take my chances after all these years of never getting the flu
