Hello, lately I've been thinking about if maybe picking up a hobby like building model airplanes, or buying some Legos to build with and things of this nature would be worthwhile in regards to if they actually help at all with improving mental function.

I know doing things like crossword puzzles, wordsearches, drawing, coloring etc. are commonly said to be beneficial and are good to do, so I'm just wondering if building model kits or Legos and things of that nature would help along the same lines.

A psychiatrist who once treated me said that using one's hands (& fingers) requires a large amount of the brain's capacity. So she said, if I was becoming depressed or anxious, if I could find something to do that involved the use of my fingers & hands it would help to prevent the spread of the depression & / or anxiety to larger-&-larger areas of the brain. So perhaps building model airplanes or building things with Legos might have that sort of beneficial effect on you? I don't know. But it may be worth a try!

I say go for it. Especially if you feel drawn to it. It sounds fun and yes, mentally engaging.

I knit. Learning new patterns is the bees knees to my mental engagement. It is soothing and pleasurable to use my hands while also using my brain.

I think this is a great idea (I have a good friend who builds Legos, there are some great Lego sets around these days, including free brick sets etc and sets for age 18 plus).

I play the piano

I also think that engaging the brain and hands is often soothing and fun.
