Has anyone had this done? It's also for history of breast cancer. My mother died of ovarian cancer and for years, I've been going to my gynecologist every 6 months for an exam. Every year I get a pelvic ultrasound. Now she's suggesting genetic testing--an expensive blood test. I have two grown daughters, so it may be a good idea to get the test. No one else in my family had ovarian cancer, and no close relatives with breast cancer either.

hi rainbow. The tes they do is called the CA25 test. It is expensive but some places will give it to you for free or reduced. Try asking your local health department about it.

Thanks, Rhapsody and thunderbear.

I used to get the CA25 but my dr. said it wasn't useful. I've got the name now. It's the BRAC Analysis. Would you believe it could cost over $3000!? But there's a different version, fewer tests run on the blood sample, for $500! I'm trying to find out if insurance covers it. It's to see if you carry the gene for breast and ovarian cancer.

Just as a caution, you may want to see if it will effect you getting or keeping life insurance should the test come up positive!
Also, if it is positive, what will you do with this information? Are you prepared to handle the information?

Just some things to think about before going ahead....

Peace!

Hey rainbow. I would think ins. would cover it if there is a history of it in your immediete family. My ins. was going to cover a spinal tap to test me for MS because I am geneticly at risk (my mom had MS) but I do not want a spianal tap.
