contact dermatitis vs hives

I went to the doctor this afternoon for a rash that I have on my face. He asked me about any new meds, makeup, or foods. I said I couldn't remember anything new and he looked at it and said he thought it was contact dermatitis and called me in some cream.

Well after I got home I got to thinking that last night I ate a mango and the way I ate it I got it on my face right where the rash is. So it could be hives. So will the cream he gave me help with the rash anyway?

Hi,

It will still be contact dermatitis if it was caused by the mango. If the creme is a form of cortizone put the minimum you can on your face. It works pretty quickly.

just seconding january's comments - it sounds like contact dermatitis to me (although i'm no professional by any means, just someone who's had the misfortune of getting hives in the past few weeks). with hives - they appear on one part of your body, go down, and show up somewhere else. so at the moment, i am cycling through having some on my neck, then on my stomach, then on my thighs. each rash last only a few hours or so.

hope the cream works for you quickly!!! i have a friend who gets a bad, red rash around her mouth when she eats mangoes too.

I wanted to add that if you are allergic to Mangos, don't eat the cherry/mango mix of Tic Tacs. They have dried mango juice in them.

Thanks for the heads up on that..I would have tried them because I love the taste of mangos. I am going to try to stay away from them for awhile and let it clear up and then we will see. Next time I see my regular doctor..the one I saw yesterday was the doctor on call for my clinic I will mention it to him and see what he says.

It's quite possible to be allergic to the skin of the mango and not allergic to the fruit itself. But only you know if you were eating it from the skin which made contact with your face. This is also common with limes, where the skin of the lime might turn someone's skin brown where it touches, but has no allergic reaction if eaten.

I'm not a medical doctor, but had my share of both hives and allergic reactions. Hives tend to show up as smooth bumps, though itchy, and not just in the one area like on your face.

But it really doesn't matter, because the cream will work for both.

When I've had hives, they were more systemic, and I needed a systemic medication (oral or injection). Creams are good for something more surface and rashy and localized. The hives I've had and that I've seen on my kids are not like a rash. They are much bigger bumps, like welts. And they come and go on different parts of the body. Hives are weird! I think a cream sounds good if you have a rash on your face. You can also try benadryl.

I hope the cream helps your rash, jbug. It sounds like mangoes are a common thing to be allergic to. I didn't know that.

Just thought that I might add that the last time my mom ate mangos she got a red rash on her face around her lips/ on side of face also. It went away for her after two days but it was kinda itchy for her. Just thought I would add my two cents.

Well, hives are big red blotches that usually appear on the arms and legs first...so it really does sound like contact dermatitus or an allergic reaction. If the creme is cortisone, use it and you will be in good shape. I've had both, and I know. Plus I live with a nurse and asked her.
