Lately I've been a bit concerned about my friend. She is 28 years old and keeps getting sick all the time. She gets cold after cold, after cold, and flu after flu after flu, non stop. She's been sick at LEAST 5 times in the past two months (a cold for a week, then fine for a few days, then the flu for a week, then fine for a day or two, then another cold, etc). The past few years I've noticed that she tends to get sick a LOT, but this year has been even worse. One thing that keeps popping in my head of concern is that I'm worried the cause of her getting sick all the time could be that maybe she has HIV. I know she has had several partners in the past but hasn't been with anyone since her daughter was born (six years ago). She never told me if any of the guys she was with were ever tested for HIV and I am concerned because I remember hearing that one of the symptoms of HIV/Aids is being constantly sick all the time. Do you think I should mention to her that maybe she should get tested for it? I don't want to worry her or offend her though. But I am concerned about her constantly being sick. Does anyone know of any other conditions/causes that could have constant colds and flus as a symptom? I know she is quite overweight and has severe asthma but I don't think that would contribute to constantly being sick would it? Aside from her asthma that's the only health concern I know of that she has.

Any suggestions or advice on what I should do?

The asthma and weight would certainly cause chronic illness. Lungs and airways don't clear themselves out well. You can't underestimate the havoc those two problems have on health. The frequent colds may actually be allergies.

In addition to what farmergirl said...people with asthma are more susceptible to any respiratory illness (like colds and flu). This is why people with asthma are on the "at risk" list when it comes to vaccines for flu.
