So about two weeks ago I tripped over the welcome mat outside my house and face planted into the deck. My foot was in excruciating pain but I just thought I had sprained it really bad. But the pain wasn't going away so yesterday I went to the ER and they told me that I had actually broken my foot. This whole time I had been walking on a broken foot It's a non-displaced foot fracture, and it's a clean break all the way across one of the bones. I suspect the 5th metatarsal because that's where it hurts. The ER doctor never told me which bone was broken. I've been told by many people that I should've been put in a cast rather than a CAM boot but that's what the ER doctor gave me, plus crutches. I'm not able to see a doctor until January 5th for my follow up visit. I'm adjusting pretty well to the CAM boot but the crutches are hell. I wasn't given any instructions about if I can take off the CAM boot to drive or sleep so I just keep it on 24/7 unless I have to shower, that's the only time I take it off.

If you have ever broken your foot can you help me out a little with some advice? What should I do until I can see the doctor on the 5th?

A boot is usually fine for a non displaced foot fracture esp if u walked on it for days without moving the bone. Not an MD but I did the same to my ankle. Didn't turn all black/blue & I could walk on it so, even tho it was swollen, didn't think it was broken maybe sprained. Just happened to have a Doc appointment the following week. Figured since I was there, I'd mention it. He checked it over. Then decided to take an xray last minute. He was even surprised
that it was broken. I was given a walking boot...checked with doc & nurse friends & they told me the same. The boot can also be tightened as swelling goes down whereas a cast has to be replaced. But it's a doc choice. I can't work those underarm clutches either. So got the kind that you put yr arm thru. Only needed one. Good luck.
Can't help snickering that you fel! over a welcome mat!!!! Sorry.... Take care of yourself.

Condolences on the broken foot. I broke mine many years ago. Because I'm so awkward and clumsy, I was given a walker and even had problems with that. I had a cast. My T broke his foot at the same time and he had the boot. He recovered much quicker than I did.

This summer, I was looking at different kinds of mobility aids for a different reason. I ran across some of the other types of crutches.

The SmartCrutch is pretty cool. It's a forearm crutch with a pivoting angle. And it comes in some pretty cool colors.
Broken Foot .. in need of advice!!

The Ergobaum is another updated forearm crutch.
Broken Foot .. in need of advice!!

And the updated underarm crutches made by millennial medical.
Broken Foot .. in need of advice!!

And the knee walker scooter.
Broken Foot .. in need of advice!!

The one thing I'd be leery of is the hands-free knee crutch. But I'm really clumsy.
Broken Foot .. in need of advice!!

I've seen these different crutches listed on resale sites, like Craigslist and Mercari, if money is a concern.

Hope you heal quickly.

Thank you for responding!! That helps clear things up for me, I didn't know it was okay to be in a walking boot yet. I'm glad I didn't need a cast though cause from what I've read online you can't get them wet and I know they're not removable like my boot. I'll check out the other type of crutches you recommended. Hobbling around without having my hands free to carry things is driving me nuts and it's only been 2 days LOL. When I tripped over the welcome mat I laughed and cried at the same time. I'm glad none of my neighbors saw me because it was so embarrassing. But it's a little ironic because I was actually throwing out my grandma's flowers from her funeral and I had been putting it off for a week because I had a REALLY intense feeling that something bad was going to happen when I got rid of them. So finally the day comes that I muster up the courage to do so, and on my way back up to the door I tripped over that dang welcome mat I didn't think it was possible to do so, but I made it possible!! So I ended up be right about something bad happening when I got rid of the flowers, I now have a broken foot because of it. I told my family I will never get rid of somebody's funeral flowers again.
