I have asthma and a bad cold right now, my doctor gave me a steroid shot and inhaler and it is making my anxiety awful. I am not sure what to do about this? Can an inhaler really have this much effect on me? Should I stop taking it?

Sounds like there may be a interaction going on. Go any website that can tell if that is a possibility. If I am correct, inhalers can mess with any meds that you are on. Also I took prednisone in the past and it made me get confused. Call your doctor.

It could be the steroids that are messing with you. Some of them, I can't take because they make me intensely suicidal. They make life hard for a lot of people, even those who don't have pre-existing mental health issues.
Asthma inhalers can cause anxiety as well. They can cause side effects like shakiness and racing heart that mimic anxiety symptoms, and for some people that can trigger anxiety and panic attacks. I wouldn't just stop taking it, though, because being able to breathe is pretty important. Call your doctor. There are a bunch of different asthma inhalers that don't all have those same side effects, so your doc may be able to switch you to something that's better for you. |

The quick-acting "rescue inhalers" are stimulants, so my money is on the inhaler triggering your anxiety, if it's the albuterol. I warn people in the office before giving them a nebulizer treatment that it may make them jittery.
Some people do get agitation or mood changes from the steroids as well, so the steroid shot itself or if you have a steroid inhaler then yes it could be coming from there as well. a steroid shot usually will stay in your system for a few days, so it may affect you more than a steroid inhaler. I would call your doc and ask for advice. |
