So I went to the dentist about my cracked tooth. Good news is I won't need a root canal. But the doctor says my back gums need a "deep cleaning".

Now I think this is a scam. But I have now had to leave about 10 dentists because they all wanted to do this "deep cleaning"

In fact this dentist is going to do the cleaning combined with work for the tooth with a chip in it.

That concerns me.

It says that's she knows I am going to try to get out of the cleaning and that is why she has put the two together.

But I don't feel like I can leave again -- two reasons:
1. Every dentist immediately starts harping on this issue -- even though I don't think it is real. I have 3 teeth / gums with mild pockets.
2. This dentist look about 97 X-rays and I don't want to get my head irradiated again. (and you know how dentists are.)

Has anyone had this "deep cleaning" -- I have heard it takes bout 2 hours and at the end your mouth is a bloody mess and you have to take antibiotics. I feel like that is an unnecessary use of antibiotics. It is also uncertain how many times you might have it or how long it will take to heal.

But if I do hear that this deep cleaning is a scam... I will leave and get the tooth done elsewhere.

I’ve heard from The Today Show that deep cleanings can be pretty unnecessary and they are painful. I heard that a few years ago so maybe it’s gotten better.

I think my mind is made up. They did my peridontal chart but to me it didn't seem that bad (like there were four teeth that were problems) and I didn't really prepare before the visit. I have literally had them at me for years to do this since I was in my early 30s and I haven't had a tooth fall out yet. The problem though is I don't seem to be able to find ANY dentist who isn't always insisting on this. But this one rubbed me the wrong way. I have a cleaning coming up. I will get that done and then ask for my X-rays and go to another dentist to get my tooth fixed.

So I went and did it anyway. And unless I was crazy, it was nothing. They had given me Novocaine for something else so I asked them, how long it would be and they guessed about 10 minutes. Nope, it was 3 and it didn't hurt and there wasn't even any blood. I do have three more sections to have done, but they only do them one at a time so it won't be painful. I had a on-lay but on a tooth at the same time and that was super difficult.

Next week I'm going with my son to a dentist and he's a little bit scared about this, but it's okay he is a child. I don't think there is a reason to not trust the dentist. He anyway knows more about teeth than you.

I have run into a lot of the wrong dentists. If they are not willing to talk to you to explain things, FIND SOMEONE ELSE. I do have periodontal disease and believe I need deep cleaning because of this. They need to keep bacteria away from under the gums. It's not a mess, or painful, but they do use novocaine. With dental care, you want to prevent future problems, all of which can cost a fortune. Infections under the gums can transmit bacteria to cause heart disease, so its nothing to fool around with.
Since they are all telling you the same thing, you could try it. It will probably cost less than having your whole mouth done. It's very important to find a dental office where you feel they are honest and courteous. Hugs!
