For some, hair health also improves our mental health. In what ways can you see how your hair affects your mental health, or even just hygiene in general?

Since this pandemic, I've not really styled my hair as much (using a flat-iron, using certain products like leave-in conditioners). I started out using only anti-dandruff shampoo, since I thought it was strong enough to keep my scalp protected and cleaned. Little did I know that such shampoos weren't good for my kind of hair. I also wanted to avoid certain products that are known for causing hair to fall out, since mine seemed to be falling out in chunks, due to both stress and my shampoo type. So I switched shampoos, about a year after the advent of this pandemic.

I now wash my hair every time I shower. I will condition it at least twice a week, if not more.

I use Biolage products: Ultra Hydrasource Shampoo and HydraSource Conditioning Balm.

I'll occasionally use other products to style my hair, such as leave-in conditioners and oils and flat-iron protectants, but I rarely style my hair these days.

I've also not had a haircut in over 2 years! At least not a professional one. I let it grow, but then it kept tangling and falling out in huge chunks. So, I decided to cut my own hair. I followed some of the tips found online. It worked, sort of. It's not perfect, but it passes as a decent haircut. I'm fortunate to have brunette hair that is thick enough to keep wavy, in order to hide the flaws from my own haircut.

I do still use over-the-counter hair coloring products. Right now, I've been consistently using L'Oreal's Paris Superior Preference Fade-Defying Color + Shine System - 6.5 fl oz - 3 Soft Black hair coloring kit. I color my hair every two months or even three, depending on whether or not I plan on going walking that month, or if I have a medical appointment. I never shop in stores, nor do I hang out with people unless it's for a brief essential exchange of gifts or donations outside. I shield in place consistently - and have been for about 2 years now. So, I only color my hair when needed. Eventually, however, I want to improve my mental health by coloring my hair every month, to cover up those roots, and put on some cosmetics. If I can add in more outside walking (still with a mask on) as well as Zoom time with friends and family, then I'll have a reason to style my hair and put on cosmetics and jewelry. I miss doing those things for myself.

I plan on also adding in a mani-pedi every month, but I have to work that into my monthly routine. I have chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME), so it's not easy for me to keep a routine when I have certain days where I'm bedbound. I'm homebound out of an abundance of caution for myself and others during this pandemic, but also because of my CFS/ME. Still, I try to do what I can to take care of things like my hair.
I was washing my hair every other day, which was too often. My hair is very coarse and curly, and too much washing takes out the natural oils and makes it very dry. Now I wash it about twice a week. I have to add a lot of conditioner each time I wash or it gets uncontrollably frizzy. I also add oil, such as argan or Moroccan oil, to tame the frizz.

My hair has been falling out a lot and thinning on top. I tried Rogaine for women, and it didn't help at all. Someone told me about Wild Growth, an herbal product you can get from Amazon, so I have been putting that on my scalp three times a week. I think it may be helping a bit.

I'm so sorry your hair is falling out. It could be due to stress, aging, genetics, and/or Covid-19. Any combination of factors could bring about hair loss.

Additional factors might also include the type of hair products you're using. Some of the falling out and thinning might be due to certain ingredients in your shampoo, conditioner, and/or styling products. Now that I've switched brands, I don't experience as much shedding and thinning, and my hair is starting to grow back.

Here's an article that discusses "7 Harmful Chemicals in Shampoos that Cause Hair Loss." Many of the cheap shampoos and some of the more expensive shampoos will have these toxic ingredients.

1. Sulfates - Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Laureth Sulfate
2. Chemical Fragrances
3. Sodium Chloride
4. Parabens
5. Propylene Glycol
6. Diethanolamine (DEA)
7. Triethanolamine (TEA)

And other articles like this one also agree that some of the ingredients listed above may cause hair loss.

AARP offers additional advice on what to avoid to prevent further hair loss from shampoos:

1. Foamers and thickeners.

According to New York City hair specialist and restoration surgeon Dr. Robert Dorin,
Quote:
...Sodium chloride (better known as table salt) is used as a thickener in products containing SLS, but it can cause dry, itchy scalp and encourage hair loss. Polyethylene glycol (also known as PEG, polyethylene or polyoxyethelyne) is another thickener that strips hair of moisture. If you're undergoing salon keratin treatments, these ingredients undo the benefits."
2. Preservatives.

Quote:
Johnson & Johnson's "No More Tears" baby shampoo (don't laugh - a lot of older babes with sensitive eyes still love it) recently removed Quaternium-15 (a formaldehyde-releasing preservative) from its ingredients without diminishing the product's appeal. According to Dr. Dorin, "Formaldehyde and parabens such as methylparaben and propylparaben are often included to prolong shelf life. The latter can affect hormonal balance and encourage hair loss."
3. Irritants.

Quote:
...Dr. Dorin says, "Products containing diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA) destroy hair's keratin and cause scalp irritation. Fragrances and artificial colors (they appear on the label as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color or number) are used for aesthetic reasons, but they may be irritants. And propylene glycol, most commonly used as antifreeze in cars (!!), is often added to keep shampoos and conditioners from freezing during shipping and storage."
4. Alcohol.

Quote:
...Dr. Dorin's advice: "Avoid products listing alcohol as one of the first four ingredients. The closer to the top of the ingredient list, the higher the percentage in the product."
5. Greasers.

Quote:
Steer clear of "lanolin, petroleum and mineral oil," counsels Dr. Dorin.
Suggestions from the article:
1. Nature's Gate Biotin Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner.
2. Living Proof Restore Shampoo and Conditioner.
3. Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner.

I use only Verb products. Shampoo, conditioner, curl cream and ghost oil.

It’s vegan and cruelty free. Smells so good.

I only wash every 5-6 days. My hair is to my waist and healthy as can be. I never use any heat tools. I only airdry. I use a wide tooth comb when wet and do not brush it once dry. Just use my finger if need be. I have natural wave and curls.

Excellent post!

I'm really lucky to have a stylist I adore and who is talented with hair. And her shop is only 1/2 mile from my apartment - an added bonus!

I have found Olaplex shampoo to be a miracle for my dry hair. It's magic. Olaplex shampoo is about $28 a bottle on Amazon, but so little is required for each wash that a bottle lasts for about 5 months.

I use olive oil shampoo and tea tree oil conditioner. my hair used to be thick now its thin so I switched back to natural products and added some supplements and my hair is getting thicker. still have areas of concern but it takes time. been having hair loss issues since 30 I'm 47.

I wash it twice a week. every 3 days. I brush it regularly. I use a hot iron on my bangs I admit a area of concern, so I try to avoid it but I have wavy hair and bald spots I try to hide with bangs. . I air dry my hair.
