Okay, so I’ve had anaemia a couple of times, most recently I know of 5 or 6 years ago, treated with iron supplements which my stomach didn’t like.

This time, no symptoms as such, but went to donate blood and failed the finger prick test, and so they ran a test and hb is 95 when it needs to be 125, not good. The nurse was surprised I don’t have symptoms.

I need to get back to my gp and discuss but wonder if anyone has experienced recurrent anaemia? I’m vegetarian but I do eat non heme iron sources, lentils, pulses, maybe I need to be more mindful about combining with vitamin C.

I read anti inflammatory meds can contribute and this is interesting to me as I’ve been on naproxen for 9 months for sporadic sciatica pain, so maybe that’s part of it.

Any experience of gentler iron supplements which don’t upset the stomach?

I just took a lab test to see if I can quit the iron supplement. My doc ordered a specific iron supplement I take mine every other day with lunch, makes it easier to take. Though they recommended empty stomach I can’t do that. Funny I was a vegetarian from 15 to 50 never had anaemia until now. Found out the same way, went to give blood and failed the finger prick.

How are you doing @Nammu? Did you get the all clear from your blood test?

I got my serum level back and both my haemoglobin and ferritin are low so I’m taking a gentler iron supplement, a syrup which is taken with food.

Yep. I’m all good now. I’m taking it twice a week so I don’t get low again. My iron was very good but I don’t recall the numbers. The Red Cross recommends an iron supplement if you regularly give blood so that’s why I’m doing the twice a week thing.

That seems sensible and think I might do something similar once I get levels back up (although that’s not advice given here). Well done on giving blood!

I am anemic and like you I don’t like supplements because they bother my stomach. Maybe talk to the doctor about what you can do to mitigate side effects.

Hi, I’m a few months on now and I’m doing okay,,I’ve been taking an over the counter supplement which isn’t as strong as the super strength one the Dr was going to prescribe- need to get my levels checked again soon.
