I went to the doc this morning and found out I do have yet another sinus infection. I am getting good at diagnosing myself. I knew I didn't have bronchitis and that it was just a sinus infection and I just needed some antibiotics and I'd be fine.

I was mortified on Saturday I was sitting at the dining room table at my parents house with my mom and Rex and a big snot glob came down from my nose..sorry for the tmi. I knew it was time to go see Dr. Jim. My mom just laughed and said I was channeling my childhood. I just laughed it off but inside I was just so embarrassed. So I get my antibotics and all will be well.

I can't wait for winter to be over.

Do you think that allergies are causing these infections?

I have had sinus problems and infections all of my life including five surgeries. I'm concerned about the amount of antibiotics necessary. Your physician should refer you to an allergist or ent to have it diagnosed. There could be blockage that allows the normal draining to just sit there and become infected. I saw an allergist and started receiving medications which helped, but then I kept having problems. My first ent kept wanting me to have surgeries, so I finally said, "I'm not having another one without seeing if there is a root cause." I was referred to a different ent and received excellent care. Turns out that even though I did not have symptoms that my tonsils were completely filled with pus and were removed. I haven't had much trouble since.

For self care, I take my prescribed medications and use a sailine wash from NeilMed. They have different products and I use it twice per day. It has been shown to reduce infections considerably. If I do get an infection, I noticed that after about a week or two without antibiotics that I get better. If I start getting worse or not any better after a week and a half, I call my allergist and he just prescribes it over the telephone as he knows that I am cautious about taking too many antibiotics. Since my last surgery in 2001, I have only required antibiotics three times.

I would ask to be referred to an allergist or ent. If surgery is recommended see if you can get a second opinion also. Good luck. Email me if you have questions. I have lots of experience...sad to say. But, no more hack and spitting!! Lovely, huh?
