I was just wondering if it's normal for a 18 month old to ALWAYS be thirsty. She will drink a whole sippy cup of milk and still want more. It's not only with milk but juice or water also. Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

Is she eating well ? If not she could be using fluids as a food substitute. It is also possible signs of early diabetes ? Either way I would get the Dr to have a look it wont hurt and at the least put your mind at rest. |

I agree you could mention it to your doctor. She should be on a schedual - is she eating enough? Doctors say it's only necessary to give children juice, once a day and many parents serve way too much juice. This can lead to gaining too much weight and also tooth decay.

Thanks for input. She eats most meals well and she only has fresh orange juice in the mornings with breakfast. She is picky but she eats a pretty steady amount. She doesn't eat much lunch but tends to make up for it at dinner time. I also thought it could be a sign of early diabetes but I didn't want to jump to conclusions out of worry. She had a check up not even a month ago and everything was great they just said she's a little girl but is proportional, short and good weight for being that short. Does anyone know the right amount of milk and water a 18 month old should be getting?

While I say yes it seems normal for a 18 months old to want to drink any thing and every thing that is given to them - it still never hurts to talk to her doctor about it to make sure there is not a medical problem causing the thirst.
