Best advise to tell my daughter mommy is sad.
I was trying to tell her this today, this evening. She couldn't understand, she was making things up like. Daddy didnt take out the garbage.

I am sad. I am a depressed person.

I used that philosophy when my daughter was young. I would just tell her that it was a bad day and mommy was feeling down. I never wanted her to think it was her fault. She got to where when she would see me cry, "is it a bad day". All I had to say was yes and she would go play quietly and not take it personally. She is a school counselor now, and doesn't hold on to guilt like I did when I was a child, for which I'm grateful. She's still there for me when I'm depressed.

There are good books out there that help educate children about these things one is: Sad Days, Glad Days: A Story about Depression Hardcover – April, 1995
by DeWitt Hamilton (Author), Judith Mathews (Editor), Gail Owens (Illustrator) (I haven't read this one so don't know if it is good or not). My advice would be to get a book that helps explain a parent's depression and read it with your daughter. Then answer any questions she has.

I always told my kids I had "sad sickness," and that it would pass. They seemed to understand fairly well. I think they were each around four or five when I brought it up.
