Congratulations, Colleen! You must remember you won't be a perfect parent. But you will be the best parent you can be.

Believe people when they say "it goes fast", it really does go fast.
Politely listen to people's opinions of what you should do and then do what YOU feel is right. And you will get opinions from everyone. Nap when baby naps, babies are exhausting. Follow your instincts. Picking up a fussy/crying baby will not spoil them, it will make them know you are there for them. And congratulations! __________________ Mags Depression diagnosed March 1996 PTSD diagnosed January 2000 BPD diagnosed September 2013 |

Congratulations!
I had four. I echo what everybody else has said. I will add... Don't expect to live the same way...in other words, a baby changes things (obvious, I know...) You must adapt to her or him and not expect the baby adapt to you. Be flexible. If you are not, you will become frustrated with this little human very quickly. Make things as easy on yourself as you can as far as the rest of your life goes. Pack those things away that don't really serve a purpose. Organize and streamline things and routines as much as you can now. Take your spare change and forgo something you don't need (like your daily stop at Starbucks) and start a college fund. Don't set a precedent as far as being the only one to do the daily care. Have the father do as much as you do from the very beginning and as a matter of course. Enjoy your sleep now. You will not sleep the same way until he/she becomes an adult |

Congratulations!! I agree with Technigal. Your instincts are your guide. Everyone has their opinions on what's right or wrong but no-one knows baby better than mum.
Take a nap every chance you get and cook meals ahead and pop them in the freezer for when you're too tired to cook and don't be ashamed to ask for help when you need it. We all do at times. |

Let the baby get used to hearing noise like leaving the TV on when they nap. It will make your life easier.
Read books about taking care of the baby. A baby swing is your best friend. A pack and play portable crib will travel with you for years, be used as a playpen and a bassinett. I used the bassinet and kept the baby next to my bed for months, rather than putting them right into their crib in another room. This way, I could keep a closer watch on the baby and be able to relax better myself. You'll want to swaddle the baby in a blanket and prop them on their side slightly using a rolled up blanket or a wedge. You'll read about that. Enjoy this wonderful, exciting time! __________________ "And don't say it hasn't been a little slice of heaven, 'cause it hasn't!" . About Me--T |
