My baby will be 3 months old soon and is hitting the "colicky" phase. The last 48 hours have been so bad I nicknamed the craziness.

How on earth do I calm a hysterical baby who won't stop crying? So far, he's been consolable but I can see this escalating to the point that he is crying like that to no avail for hours. His crying sessions now are already pretty lengthy. I've had to put him down and walk away a few times, which I really don't like doing. I need to acquire the ability to sit through crying spells for any length of time know matter how bad the crying is. I also think crying for too long is stressful to the baby and affects their cortisol levels which in turn impairs development.

Someone recently told me men hear crying differently than women; they can tune the cries out. To them, cries are just cries. I don't know how true that is, but what I do know is that the crying makes me vibrate in a negative way. I have to fix it. I have to soothe my baby. I try to make a challenging game of it. I respond promptly while at the same time giving myself time to listen to his cries to understand what he is communicating. This only makes him very upset ... oops

Just trying to prepare myself for what's next. We saw the Dr today bc I thought he was teething. Turns out the colic has begun.

I'm guessing the Dr diagnosed the colic? It is usually worst the first 4 months or so but unusual to start at 3 months (normally it starts earlier), just to be careful not to write something off as colic when it could be something else.

My son had bad colic for the first 4 months, but it really eased off after that. In the meantime we tried different things, we would find sometimes massaging his tummy would help, sometimes a warm bath and soothing music, sucking a pacifier, being rocked, nothing ever worked all the time however and it was mix and match.

We also tried colic drops, but those ddn't really help, they might be worth a try though. If he is formula fed you might want to try a lacto free type just in case that is the culprit, they used to say breastfed babies don't get colic but these days they acknowledge they can and do (mine did!). If you are breastfeeding maybe look at your diet (they say to avoid spicy food).

Here is an article I found online which might be useful:

Colic - NHS Choices

If all else fails remember this will likely get better very soon by itself, they just seem to grow out of it.

Sometimes babies cry no matter what we do to soothe them. It really is ok when you've tried everything to put them down and take a break. Take a shower, have a cup of tea....something to sooth yourself.

Please try to not get up in the "if my baby cries to much it will negatively impact his development." All that's doing is making you stress out more and your baby will pick up on that.

You are doing all the right things. You took him to the doctor, you are trying to comfort him. Babies can get really fussy when they are teething or have colic. But they do grow of it.

Remember you are doing the job of two parents. You don't have any one to hand him off too when you are overwhelmed. You care and that's the most important thing

If you breast feed: drink tea with anis, fennel, cumin,.. helped a lot with my child.

You're strong and it will pass! keep up
Thanks for this!
