I think this article from Reader's Digest is interesting. My children are grown, but maybe it will give some parents of younger children some food for thought.

Thanks for posting this, Trav. Upon reading it, I felt sad by acknowledging that my mom did almost all of those to me. And her inconsistency was agony...one day I was her best buddy and the greatest kid in the world. The next day I was a waste of a human being and she regretted ever having me.

I'm proud of myself because I worked so hard in therapy, and have always been med compliant. I truly did break the cycle with my own children.

Me, too, Bethrags. I developed bipolar when my children were just getting into school, but I don't think I did some of the damaging things my mother did to me--thanks to therapy.
