Why is it that I have to beg to receive medical attention?
Currently I am jobless, my job has temporary laid everyone off and because I was not employed for a considerable amount of time last year I cannot collect unemployment. So with out an income I have no way of paying for therapy.

So today I was told by a non-profit organization, of all places, that I need to go get a medical coupon and it will take at least two weeks to clear. Other organizations I have contacted seem to be ignoring my request for help. This is very disturbing to me that a person who is so obviously in distress cannot get help quicker.

I am having break-downs more frequently, and almost anything seems to set me off. Today my cat was missing for all of two hours and I began uncontrollably crying thinking she may have been hit by a car or worse.

I also found out that I messed up on my financial aid for school, something I've been waiting for 12 years to do and won't be able to go until winter quarter.

ARRRG! I just want everything to be fixed now so I can move on with my life and find me again.

Oh, Brokensrestartbutton, I'm so sorry you're having frustrating problems at the moment. It sounds like your town was hit especially hard with the economic woes of the last couple years; sounds like they've got problems of their own with lots of people needing their help.

Glad you found your cat; I have two and worry about them frequently. Did you start the red tape to get the medical coupon? Sorry you can't do school until winter either; that would have been nice to have to focus on while you work on all the other nit picking things and hoops to jump through one needs to do to survive. Any indication when your job might come back?

My heart goes out to you. How stressful and disappointing! I've been trying to find any kind of medical assistance the past couple months as well, and I am absolutely appalled by the lack of mental health resources. It's like the rest of world doesn't understand how very important it is.

The local health department might have resources. Sometimes inpatient psychiatric hospitals will know of organizations that offer emergency counseling services. Also your local Salvation Army might know. If you're religious, a church is a good place to go as well. If it gets too much and you feel like you're really going to fall apart crisis hotlines are always an option.

You and your cat are going to be just fine. Hang in there. School may be starting later than preferred, but you'll be there before you know it. You can always come here and vent (you definitely deserve to!).

Thanks for your replies =)

I feel a little better having started the process of getting a medical coupon.

I don't believe my job will be back until September, but I am looking for work elsewhere and might find something better, fingers crossed. Currently trying to avoid boredom, which causes my mind to then wander off to worse case scenarios and I start the self loathing. Gross.

I was diagnosed with ADHD 1 & 1/2 yrs ago at age 63 - I lost my job 3 months later -and then, immediately lost my medical insurance. I had to abruptly stop my ADHD med. I have multiple medical problems and had to go to a doctor in order to get my prescriptions- I could afford the generic forms of most of my meds but not the ADHD med- The doctor wanted me to have blood work which I could not afford - I've had quite a few problems that could not be treated - For example I was supposed to have a mammogram and bone scan a year ago - could not afford -colonscopy - could not afford. I've been a nurse for 40 years helping people and saving lives but cannot get help for myself. Thankfully - I will be going on Medicare Oct. 1 - I can only hope that some of the problems have were not made more serious because I've had to wait for medical care. In addition, I felt I needed a therapist to deal with the adhd - and had to wait all this time. Sue A

In Orlando, there are no free counseling services - the main psychiatric hospital will treat in an emergency only - but no therapy (they will give meds) unless you have insurance or medicaid ins. Sue A

Wow! I knew I was having trouble with getting psych care, but I didn't realize how bad other states are as well. I have been paying cash for my pdoc for at least a year now. I am so stressed financially I just called Medicare to see if they could help. They pulled up several doctors and counselors who take my insurance. I have a new appointment next week.
I am so glad I checked into it.
It is so true that the general population devalues the need for the us to get help. It is truely sad.

I'm sorry richyy68 that you do not qualify monetarily for the State services, have you checked other resources and helpers?

Sometimes Grad schools will offer Psych student counseling services. I saw one once, it was ten dollars/hour, I did not attend that school, and she was supervised by her professor. Almost like med students or something, I saw her for 6 mos while I worked on finding a more permanent solution, it helped stabilize me and bought me some time...

Do you all know about 211.org ? It's a website and a phone number, you can dial 211 from anywhere and it will connect you to mental health providers, county and what not in your area. Check out the website too. It's not in all areas but may be in yours.

Love and hugs,
Tara

you have to be healthy to get health care
because if you are too stressed out to jump through the hoops, you don't get the help
you have to wait until you are healthy enough to to make all the phone calls, medical forms, etc (if you become healthy enough) I don't wonder anymore why people end up on the streets or stay sick on disability
