I was wondering if anyone knew of a life insurance company that will accept someone with a mental illness and a history of suicide attempts, years after the suicidal thoughts are gone and the person is stable.
I'm considering starting up my own business, but one thing holding me back is the fact that I'd lose my group life insurance at work. We are heavily in debt and my family needs income replacement if anything ever happens to me. I'm not suicidal nor am I looking for the insurance to pay if I do become suicidal. I want it to pay if I get cancer or die in a car accident. The best I can get is AD&D insurance, which does cover a lot of the things that could happen to me at my age. But it's very possible that I could get some disease like cancer and die early, leaving my family penniless. Good luck - anyone with a mental illness or addictions history is pretty much excluded from life insurance, or at least that's been my experience. I tried to get supplmental health isurance privately to cover me, from when I lost insurance at the old job and insurance at the new job kicks in. I got turned down by every company I applied to.

I might be mistaken but I am pretty sure that you can get a policy that just covers cancer. You know those commercials with the duck? You might be able to go that route -- get one for accidental death and then get another policy for those devastating illnesses.

Starting a business when you are heavily in debt may be awfully stress-provoking.
If you haven't already, maybe it would be helpful to talk with a financial advisor. I wonder if your current life insurance policy is one that can be converted from an employer policy to a private policy upon termination of employment. You could call the insurance company and inquire about that. |

My husband and I were able to get a policy through Primamerica. There is a clause that says that if it is suicide within 2 years of purchase of the policy it will not pay. Hopefully this could work for you as well.

Who has access to any records that you've attempted suicide?
I've attempted multiple times yet I've never been denied any type of insurance. |

Despite the fact you attempted suicide yiur where companies would " want you to be" to be considered for a review as well as your depression you'll just have to pay special premiums and are in a different classification but still obtainable. And for those who are alcoholic you too can get approved at a higher premium after 5 years if sobriety!
