What do you think about paying for a listening ear?

I don't see anything wrong with it. After all counsellors are trained professionals who have to make a living. I'm seeing a psychologist who has a PhD. That's many years of training. Unfortunately they're not covered by public health care in Canada, so I pay her out of pocket, which is really expensive but it's worth it to me. I don't know where I'd be if I hadn't gotten into therapy.

I used to feel a little funny about it, like I was just paying to have coffee with someone. But it's so much more than that, it really is. They're trained to see other sides of your situation, they help you reframe your thinking, they're not going to judge you, they can be your lifeline when you're hanging by a thread...I think it's worth it.

I think that listening in a therapeutic way requires skill and an enormous financial investment in education and I don't mind at all even though financially it can be difficult.

My psychologist, and my Pdoc do not take Insurance so I have to pay out of pocket for both, but I don't mind since in my mind they are the best

I dint see anything wrong with it. I went to school to get educated for my job which I get paid for. If you do your homework you can find T's that will be willing to work with you on a sliding scale. I will never go without my T because I found one I click with.

It is unaffordable but necessary. Really a very strong requirement right now. It is a profession so paying for it is just how it is.

^^^ Yes it is. It is where we choose to use our money, as we all choose. Therapy is the best gift to myself

My sister made a comment about spending so much money on therapy. I told her it's really no different than paying to see any other physician. Mental health is just as important as physical health.

It sucks! Really have to cut other things out of my life to afford it - BUT I see it as a real investment in "me" and I guess poor old T has to eat and pay to keep a roof over his head, so that's what I remind myself of. Plus it is safer with T than just chatting things over with a friend.

Do we have a choice? In order to take the prescriptions we need to correct chemical imbalances, we have to see someone. It would be nice if that someone actually cared but that is what these forum are for I think. At least I hope so.

My insurance doesn't cover T, but thankfully my T offers a reduced rate. It's still a stretch for me financially and I've had to give up some things. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world though. Even when I am completely frustrated, I know it's where I need to be at this point in my life. It's an investment in myself and my future. And honestly there have been times I am glad I don't have insurance coverage. I am not limited to a certain number of visits and I was free to choose the T that fit me best - not who happened to be "in network."
What I like about T is that I don't feel guilty about then entire conversation focusing on me. Unlike a conversation with a friend where there is some expectation about sharing the time, my 50 minute session is focused on me because I am paying for it. I also don't feel bad telling her if I don't agree with something. After all I am paying for this. I appreciate the extensive training my T has and don't feel bad about paying for her expertise. She's very good and has obviously invested a good amount of her time and money into becoming a good therapist. It' no different than my company paying me for my expertise. |
