Due to needing to keep my Medical Assistance (state insurance in PA) I've had to fill out soooo much paperwork. Now they're making me apply for SSI/SSDI. I applied last fall (before being told I had to) and was denied but my only dx was through my GP and it was chronic depression (on anti d's for over 10 years). And the denial paper said I was denied b/c 'everyone gets depressed somethimes', sigh.

Now that I've been under pdoc care and seeing a therapist my dx is Bipoar II. although my T says Bipolar and Broderline. So I've 'proven' I need Therapy and meds (info they need to keep my insurance). I haven't worked since Nov. 2010 due to many episodes but also have never been hospitalized. What are my chances at SSDI/SSI now? Blah, I hate this..

On a side note I've also had to apply for SSI for my 13 yr old son who has been dx with Aspergers PDD-NOS. what are my chances there? I know I'll be able to keep his state insurance as he's under 18 and I'm a single mother with no income and I have this insurance for his younger sister and brother. But what about his SSI?

I would contact Pennsylvania's legal aid network and ask if they'll help

Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, Inc., 118 Locust Street Harrisburg, PA 17101, (800) 322-7572, http://www.PALegalAid.net

They have a good SSI online doc that might give you some ideas?

Chances may be good to get SSI for son. As for you they are probably just following the rules that say to get state assistance you must be denied ssi. Alway a lot of hoops to jump thru
Good luck

Also getting SSD or SSI is based on the ability to work at any job. Its a bear to get thru the system. It took two years before I was able to get SSD. They are very strict about receiving SSD, or SSI. You must be disabled and unable to hold ANY job. The more documentation you have the better. Usually people are denied the first time around but you should never drop the application. You need to preserve the application date. Always appeal a decison. Then if you win it will go back to the original date of application and you will receive back benefits based on that application date. That is why it is very important to preserve that date. I used to do disability determinations for the state of Florida. Also I got SSD myself years later and it took two years and one appeal to get it. It can be extremely frustrating!!!!
