I went to the doctors yesterday and told him I have social phobia and depression, he gave me a prescription and the name of a therapist.

I'm on my parents insurance and I don't want them to know what it was about. my questions are
1) Will they find out that I went to the Doctors?
2) Will they find out what it was about?
3) Will the insurance company know what it was about, and do something like increase health insurance cost

I'm thinking of paying for the therapy and medication out of my own pocket so nothing else is know by the insurance company/parents. Will this work or is it already to late?

Thanks

How old are you, Jasper? My understanding is if you are 18 or over, privacy laws kick in. This info will appear on the insurance report, though. I can't imagine that if would increase the insurance cost just because it has to do with what treatment you sought. Of course, the insurance would pay just for whatever amount they cover and the rest would be billed on your parent's account, if it's not totally covered.

Are your parents folks who don't believe in treatment? I'm just wondering why you are concerned about their response.

I don't know about paying out of pocket if you do have insurance coverage. Anybody else know if it's allowed?

You can always pay out of pocket, but like payne said, if you are over 18, hippa and confidentiality kicks in. You can always call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask them the specifics of their confidentiality practices. A bill may come in your name, but if you're under 18, it will come addressed to you and your parents. They generally only say "office visit" and the name and credentials of the provider. Sometimes they will say "therapy" if it's for a therapist. Your insurace company would be the best vet to answer that tho.
