I have had issues dealing with mental health since I was first seen by a therapist at age 17. I am now 26 and things have only progressively gotten worse. I have been treated inpatient/outpatient a total of 62 days since this past December. Most of them were due to depression, one for suicidal thoughts, one for aggressive thoughts/behavior at work, and last 2 for overdose on 2 different prescription drugs given to me for my disorders. I have been diagnosed with mood disorder NOS, Borderline personality disorder, ptsd and panic disorder. i still take meds and see a psychiatrist outpatient at a local university hospital. my current job has kept me from seeking the therapy that has been strongly suggested by my drs. they really want to see me in counseling but my work hours were from 7am to 6pm which rules out many therapists hours. also i do not have insurance and being able to afford even a sliding scale is a burden to me. i know i need the help. things are only getting worse and i see it happening more and more each time i have an episode. family and friends would like to see me apply for disability and therefore be able to afford/have access to the therapy and dr i need to finally get better. my illness has caused me to quit one job and now my current employer wants me to either go from full time to hardly even part time or commit to returning to fulltime without missing anymore work. how can i do that when i have dr appointments to assure i am stable?

my question....do i even have a chance of qualifying for disability for my mental illnesses based on my years of treatment especially these last 6 months?

Filing for disability can be a long process and ridiculous amount of paperwork. According to your post I would think you would have a very good chance of winning.

I hired an attorney the moment I filed . The only get paid if you win your case and they usually take 25%.

My Pdoc and Therapist were both very angry that I kept being denied , they kept sending letters and showing my inability of working for numerous illness's

Mine had to go all the way to a hearing before a judge, at the end of the hearing the judge apologized that I had been denied over and over . She found my case fully favorable , meaning I won. My first date of filing was june 2010 and I had my hearing april 2013 . and now I am still waiting for the paperwork from social security to show when my benefits will start . very frustrating.

I do know people approved on the first filing. alot depends on where you live and the amount of back log cases they have.

There is a lot of paperwork about your specific illness and how it effects your ability to work that you will be required to fill out.

I hope you will have a quick answer and not have to do all this hurry up and wait and worry nonsense.

Good luck !

I live in Tenn .. each state has there own backlog .... so it varies. I hired an attorney the day I filed the papers it didnt rush my case but they made sure every piece of paperwork was sent in on time. Hopefully you will be approved 1st or second try and not need to have a hearing.

I would work to figure out what I actually wanted. If I were literally in your position, I personally would want to work part-time and pursue counselling. But I don't see what you would be working toward just applying for SSI? I see you work a whole lot of hours and I assume that is because you want to work a whole lot of hours. What would you do if you were on SSI and not working at all? That is a big change. In other words, I would try to make a scenario I really wanted and work toward that but for right now, maybe I'd work part-time and use the rest of my time to see what I could arrange for, say, the next 5 years. You did not mention working another job with less hours and health insurance so you could see a therapist, for example. What do you actually want for yourself, given your doctor's input and your current job, whether you like it or not or feel good working there, your medical situation and what you would like to strive for there, etc.?
