I dont know if this goes here, but if it doesn't please tell me and I'll move it because I need to ask somewhere; its killing my relationship.

My boyfriend is on ODSP (ontario disability), and is registered as living with his mom who has subsidy and also ODSP. He has actually been living with me in a one bedroom with rent thats 1200$ + hydro. I should be on ODSP myself, but the only thing stoping me besides the ridiculous treatment I've seen people on ODSP get from mental health workers is a 20,000$ trust fund I'm living off of and trying to save for school.

He's been trying to move in with me for the last six months so he can pay half the rent, and it should be as simple as "change address" but we've run to a finiky little rule that says if he moves in with me he loses all his ODSP and I take full responsibility for his fanciness. This takes place of any couple thats been together over 3 months.

I was thinking about saying he was just subletting from me, but it's a one bedroom and I'm worried I'm going to get all of us in trouble by doing that.

Any ideas?

Fair enough, Pfrog. And that's my logic. I'm fine covering the rent, especially since my boyfriend's working really hard to get off ODSP and get a job in a library. He's even going back to school for the first time in 8 years! However, it's really tearing him up and making him feel inadequate because he can't pay rent or help out much with the finances except groceries.

Both of you can move into a 2 bedroom apartment and tell ODSP you are roommates. They don't need to know anything more unless you decide to get married or have shared debts and/or assets.

Did your partner tell his caseworker? If so you won't be able to do what I just suggested.

Yeah - it's one of the many stupid rules that the gov't places on the poor that forces people to lie. If you do go the route of him moving in, and saying you're just roommates, he may at some point have to show a lease / proof of rent in order to keep the shelter portion of his ODSP if he's already getting that - he may not be since he's living with his Mom.

And the asset rules around ODSP are really stupid too. I haven't been able to work for 3 years, and all my Dr's / case manager etc. tell me, i'm a perfect candidate for ODSP, but because I have a small pension plan from a previous employer, I don't qualify for ODSP, so I have to use up my retirement savings. Oh well, guess I'll worry about that in 20 years.

Good luck.
