It's been a hard week. Saturday my 21 year old cousin passed away, to add fuel to the fire my last day of work was Monday. They needed me on mixed shifts which I can not do because of my epilepsy and pregnancy so for the first time in my life I was fired. And as the special cake topper, my husband has just received word that due to company finance issues he is no longer employed at his job nor will he get another check. I will be getting a partial check but less than $200. Our light bill is 320, our water 120 and we need food. My husband is a realtor and mid December he will have a closing and will get $2000 but we have no money to make it until that time.
I have medicaid and my case manager asked last week if we needed help with bills or food and at the time we had money and jobs, I'm considering calling her and asking for help but I just feel like I would be taking away from other people. I'm at a desperate point now so I may be willing to ask for help but does anyone know how this works? If they can help with it all or some or what happens when the government steps in to help? I've needed help before but never asked, now I have a child and a child on the way, I can't risk loosing anything __________________ I'd lock my hands behind my head, I'd cover my heart and hit the deck, I'd brace myself for the impact if I were you. |

You have to apply for SNAP (food stamps) and FITAP (economic stability, emergency cash) just like everyone else; I would not worry about taking anything from someone else; if you qualify and need it then it is there for you. http://www.dcfs.louisiana.gov/index.cfm

Yes call your caseworker this week, there are many programs that will help you!
They can help with your light bill and maybe water. Food assistance will be approved, no doubt. Sorry to hear about your cousins' passing. There are times life seems to difficult to bear but don't give up, take things one day at a time. My prayers for you and your family. Since you are pregnant, you also qualify for WIC (women, infant & children help) for milk, juice, formula, peanut butter, etc. You can probably find their information in your local phone book.

Hi Purple
If you have Medicaid you are already in the government system since Medicaid is a government benefit based on need. I would advise to seek assistance if you really need it. They will ask additional questions, possibly ask for some documentation, related to your income/assets and they will let you know if you are qualified or not. |
