I don't know where to post this. I am a predicament. My prayer's have been answered to get out of the state I have been stuck in for past 3yrs. With horrible access to mental health services. Is there anyway to research other states I could move to that would have apt's affordable to those on SSDI and meets my needs for mental health.
I feel really stuck in state I live in (OHIO) because the rent is so cheap but I have no help here. I think of going back home NY or WA but rent their is expensive and would take my entire SSDI check and I would not be eligible for services through social services either state. What the heck is the point of medicare when there is no providers and no one can afford the co-pays. Medicaid is where all the services are but I am not eligible for it .... |

I know your pain. As soon as my mom and dad sell the house, I have no where to go. The system is all too hard to understand and operate. If you're like me, your mind doesn't operate with all 6 cylinders, and it's hard to know what to do.

I live in western PA and the rent is not so bad, and at least where I live, there are a lot of services available for those with mental health issues. Give it a look. Would not be too much of a move.

Dear anxiety247,
My heart reaches out to you and your situation. You are not alone. The only reason I could think of the reason your benefits would not follow you wherever you go is because you are on a local or state plan with medicaid. Your SSDI should continue wherever you go, /but you might have to fill out another application in that state, that's just a process. Now I know I read a article in the news paper about people/patients with medicaid, rating the services they received, this was a nj paper and other states were doing the same thing. You can look for that. First I would look a little deeper to see what kind of services you need. Don't leave anything out, physical/emotional include all traumas back to childhood. States with a larger population usually have more services but are more expensive as you already know to live in. I decided not to apply for SSDI because it would reduce my Workers Comp benefits and the services I receive from medicaid. So, I havent been much help. However don't feel stuck, this is temporary. If you are not satisfied with the answers you get, you have the right to appeal /fair hearing. Also contact Nami, National association for people with mental illness, they probably have advocates that can help you. You can contact me anytime. You are not stuck, and can rise above this, keep reaching out and the more you share your story the more advice/answers you will receive. Finding a great primary care doctor will be your best advocate. Hang in there and keep in touch. H.

My SSDI will follow me not a concern. As well as my Medicare. The only way I can get Medicaid is I need to spend-down $380 each month for me to have access to it. Most of the local agencies community and there are LOTS of them will not take me bc the spend-down is too high and they do not accept Medicaid.
I will be coming into some money but I do not want to go through it all on housing expenses. Then what happens when the $ is gone what do I do then?? I need to make better choices than I have in the past when it comes to money. It's a shame rent here in OH is really cheap - then on other hand no MH services ![]() I left messages for NAMI in NY and WA to see what they can suggest. |

Are there maybe other parts of Ohio that have better resources? I live in the south where the cost of living is cheaper, but I wouldn't say the MH resources are great. We have disability housing in my area but there's a waiting list. I don't know how that would work for a person moving and new to the area. Can you look on Craigs list for a roommate? Also, some ppl will hire you to live for free and manage an apartment bld or be a live in nanny. I know those may not be the most ideal suggestions, but I would look around in all parts of Ohio for low income housing.
Peace, TnT
