I haven't had a job in 3 years, except for selling a few crafts online (make between $0-$300 a month) I've been living with relatives, friends, and now a significant other. I've tried to work but every time I get a job I become suicidal. I need some form of income so applied for disability but it was denied, and I hired a lawyer and am waiting for a hearing. The lawyer wants my doctor to fill out a paper stating I can't work, but My doctors and therapists have a goal for me to get back to work, and won't fill it out.

I bounced form job to job after college, usually storming out in a huff after some perceived indignity- the last time was after working 5 years in a pharmacy. I was on meds but going through a very hard time, and sank into a suicidal depression and decided to leave my job because I was tempted to steal the meds to kill myself. Also I was walking around crying on the sales floor and getting so upset from interacting with my boss and customers that i see red and shake with anger. The doc I had at the time put me on temporary disability but that ran out long ago. I can't go back to that doctor as I owe the office more money that I can pay and they won't see me.

So my question is, how do I convince my doctors to take me out of work?

Sounds like since your doctors have a goal set of getting you back in the workforce, the only way I can see for you to convince them that you can't work would be to appease their wishes and see how it turns out. From that they will either see that you are unfit for work or alternatively you may actually find something that is tolerable.

Otherwise, if that is not an option for you mentally. You could also skip around town til you find a doctor who will give you what you want. However I'm not too sure that I'd actually back that idea but I'm just throwing it out there as an option for you.

And I'm just curious if I'm understanding this correctly. If they were to give you something that says you're not fit to work would that mean you would qualify for disability payments?

My lawyer said it would significantly raise my changes.

On a related note, I was taking 6 credits (2 classes) at the community college, just found out I am going to fail both classes

Ask them to fill out an RFC (residual functioning capacity) form for SSI.

If you are not working, someone trying to help you is not likely to see your not trying to become more functional/work in the first place as a positive thing? I would be offended if my doctor said, in essence, "Oh you poor thing, you cannot possibly work, why do you even try?". Disability is not about "needing some form of income".

I was laid off from a succession of jobs after my bipolar diagnosis. Plain and simple the stress made me manic. I told my pdoc I couldn't handle working or endure yet another person firing me for acting completely bizarre. My ssdi atty took paperwork my pdoc filled out stating I was not employable and I had to turn in the past 3 years of all medical records. I'd look for another pdoc, but if you have medical records including hospital stays, meds, therapy etc I don't think you have to have a Dr stating you can't work.

My therapist turned in paperwork saying she'd prefer me to work less hours for partial disability.

Have you talked to your pdoc to see why they think working is a reasonable goal for you? It sounds to me like they aren't getting your full story, or aren't listening. I'm in appeal too, and my tdoc has even told me that I should be on disability as much as anyone she's ever treated.
Communication is key with any medical professionals.you guys aren't on the same page about your treatment and you are the only advocate you have. Speak up!!

I was under the impression that does actually factor in...people who are unable to work due to their condition are 'in need of some form of income' which is what SSI and/or SSDI provide.
Thanks for this!
