Hi. I have been on Ssdi since 2010. Since then I've been in the psych ward, received additional diagnosis of ptsd & major depressive disorder, and had to list I'm in AA bc my pdoc put that into his notes. I filled out my list of daily activities, meds, capabilites etc. Today I get a letter stating that the Dr and staff reviewed the forms I mailed back, expect me to improve, and will send out more paperwork in 2017!!! WTF? I'm totally freaking out right now.
Has anyone dealt with this ****???

It just means that they will request information again in 2017, and at that time will determine whether or not you are still disabled. But you're considered disabled for at least the next 3 years.

One thing to keep in mind is 2017, is in 3 years...so you won't have to deal with any changes for that long at least. Also though if you haven't 'improved' by that time I doubt they would find any reason to cut benefits or anything. I think they are just saying they think you can improve and will re-evaluate in 3 years, doesn't mean its set in stone you would improve let alone improve enough to work.

Dear thickntired,

IT is going to be okay, dont panic. 2017 is a long time from today.
It is good news that you are doing better and expect improvements.
I have a final judgement of 100% total permanent disability and doctors declare my treatment as palliative not curative and I still get reevaluations letters every year!
These letters are from 3 party independent doctors. ( that my employer pays for )

So what does a final judgement of 100% total permanent disability really mean, I don't know.

SSDI is investigating everyone. They will spend extra dollars to hire PI to follow you, listening to phone and text, facebook pages. Be honest and you will be fine.

The letter sounds threatening but it is common.
Your goals should be on getting to be the best you can.
Doctors notes indicate they are on your side, which is to get better.
If they stated you weren't being cooperative, not taking meds, no show for appointments then you should be concerned.

Please don't freak out, you are okay and when in 2017 they ask for updates, this is the process they need to fill out.
Sincerely,
Happiedasiy

Thanks you all ♥
I'm quick to flip. My AA sponsor is bipolar and never received ba letter like this, but she was approved years ago and procedures change.

That is kinda creepy...I feel like people should be able to have private discussions with people close to them on their phone without someone listening in. Also can they invade your private messages in facebook?

I mean crap without proper context they could make all kinds of ridiculous assumptions based on what they hear over the phone and such. Also where do they get the funding to do this spying...if it comes out of taxes I see it as a big waste.

Happydasie - Can you provide citation on them investigating everybody, including listening to phone conversations and accessing text messages, as well as Facebook pages?

Yes Hellion I agree! My husband was saying they've probably stepped up the criteria. I know a lot of ppl were working the system by going so far as to cash deceased ppl's checks and tons of $ was released by the gov't in error. What I was thinking is with sobriety ppl do often improve but that's not counting bipolar etc. In the 90's addiction and alcoholism were considered disabilities lol

Yeah I see what you mean. That doesn't even make sense to me, because the whole point of denying all these people who should be on it is so they don't have to put money out; and paying people to follow everyone whoever signs up for disability and check their facebook pages and tap their phone calls and stuff would be totally defeating its own purpose.

I was told by a therapist that if SSDI considers you permanently disabled, it is only from the type of work younwere doing before you were disabled. Don't know how true that is.

I'm not sure about the "permanently disabled" part, but in other cases they look at whether or not you can perform the work of your last job, if you can't, then they look at if you can perform any other type of work in the national economy.

So just because you can't lift heavy objects, doesn't mean they can't deny you because you're capable of sitting at a desk doing work. It's your job (and that of your attorney) to prove you can't do anything.

Yes it is creepy and it is the tax dollar that pays for funding.
Also under the Patriot Act they can call almost everything, like people committing fraud " getting disability payments from the government when they are functionable " an actional offence and a matter of national security.

Anything electronic specially Facebook and pm aren't "private".
This is how they caught over 200 people in the tri state area.
Cops, public employees, firefighters all collecting disability and posting pictures
or video on youtube.

It would be great if they did an in house investigation and look at elected people who are collecting BIG money and leave real people in need peace to heal. And stop sending out letters that sound threatening.
H.
Please this is just to inform you so you know what is going on.
And to reassure people just be honest and continue healing.

Yes, look up NY/Nj/Conn area in The star ledger.com archives within past 6 months they have already arrested and indited well over 100 people and more to come. I'll check the archives to give you actual citation.

Facebook was a huge part in catching people who were clearly functional when they claimed to barely get out of bed /go outside/socialize/ ect.
When pictures on F show them outside, socializing, picking up their children who weigh over 40 lbs and tossing them around. Pictures of vacations. ECT....

SSDI is very serious but if you are honest, then don't worry.

I do agree they should jail those who abuse or defraud the system like that, probably makes sense why it's such a process in the first place. Also it's kind of funny that people claim physical injury then get caught doing physical activity. I suppose they enjoy slam dunk cases thanks for that

Well yeah people who do legitimately abuse the system should face legal consequences. But especially with mental illness it can get more tricky...I mean despite my disabling mental conditions that got me approved for SSI I am still able to do some activities....so yeah I suppose I'd be a little concerned they might make a judgement not really based on medical evidence...like 'you go to concerts so clearly you're not disabled and can work' I could imagine I'd post if I went to a concert on facebook.

Also though depending on ones physical injury they may still be able to do some physical activity....and still be considered disabled unless paralysis is the only physical ailment people can get SSI/SSDI for.

being honest doesn't necessarily mean you have nothing to worry about.

I was a corporate analyst which is extremely stressful. Stress makes me manic, but I explained that at the initial eval.

I looked up that article and did not find anything specifically stated that everyone who is on, or has applied for, disability had their phones tapped and their facebook accounts followed by SS employees.

Having my phones tapped and facebook stuff looked at sounds scary as heck. Does that mean I can't go out at all and if I post one picture of me outside my home, that I'm declared not disabled?

I think it is unlikely that would happen...but I don't want to say its totally outside the realm of possibility either, sometimes the system can be well...ridiculous. There was one poster saying they got denied disability because they go to church and AA meetings and so where deemed to have a lively social life and therefore the ability to work so they sometimes will have ridiculous reasons to define someone as 'not disabled'.
