My significant other & I are going to start attending couple's therapy as soon as we can, but I do have a few questions.

1: I have the Puerto Rican equivalent of medicaid, meanwhile he has good insurance from his work. Mine only covers ONE clinic as far as mental health is concerned. Will they accept just his insurance, since my plan is 100% irrevocably inflexible?

2: Since I'm confined to that one clinic, I clearly have a lot of difficulty seeing my psychologist as often as I need to. I go in for my scheduled appointment & find out I can't since it's so jam-packed... Would I be able to see OUR psychologist alone while on his insurance? Or is that just cheating?

Thanks in advance for any useful answers!

I think the only one who could answer these questions would be your husband's insurance company. Unless it also covers you (that is, you are also on his policy), then I don't think they would pay. But it's worth asking, I think.

It depends on the therapist you get. My husband is on medicaid and I have good insurance through my work. I had to search for a therapist that would bend the rules for me. It is cheating and I admit that. I talked to MANY therapists and finally found one that agreed that it was in my best interest to have couples counseling. She bills my insurance but sees us together and separately. If it is an emergency then she will see hubby alone because keeping him stable keeps me stable and is in my best interest. I'm sure if my insurance ever found out they would be livid but meh what can ya do?

I'm not sure of the answer to your question, but good luck with the couple's therapy. My husband and I do this from time to time and find it helpful (my husband moreso than I, I think, since he's experiencing supporter burnout with respect to my depression).
