Honestly when I was awarded disability I never realized about disability reviews. I have not been able to see a psychiatrist since I moved here a year ago but my primary care has agreed to renew my mental health meds from a hospitalization in October. I just have to see him every 3 months for him to agree to renew it. But I don't know if he counts as he is a primary care?

I have googled reviews a lot and am getting nervous that I will not have enough proof that I am disabled because I don't have a psychiatrist. I am frightened if I lose my disability. I was awarded in 2010 and I don't know when my review will be but I'm watching my mailbox. I read that if you don't have enough medical records they send you to one of their social security doctors and they are not easy to deal with.

Reviews are scheduled according to how long SS believes your disability should last, based upon all information you and your service providers have submitted as well as reports from their professionals. If they think there is a good chance that you will improve, the time for your review will be short (1-2 years). If they believe there is little to no chance of recovery, reviews will be less frequent (I think this is 5-7 years). They also factor in your age.

Because of the publicity concerning people seen as cheating the system, there may be an enhanced focus on MI disability cases in the future.

I believe the initial SS award letter indicates when you can expect a review.

I can understand your concern; I had it too, really worried in fact. However, it was unfounded; my review consisted of a simple form letter that was pretty short and included some such questions as:

Check boxes as to level of functioning/improvement: worse, same or better in last 6 or 9 mos; check one box whether I had gone back to work, attempted it, talked over with doc, or not considered it; with some additional boxes here and there that needed to be checked about if might have attended school during that time and level completed; list last 4-6 (I cannot remember, but it was at least 4) dates of visits to any medical providers and the reasons for the visits (I just called each of my providers to get the dates and knew what they were for, or can ask them if need be to get the info).

I wish I could remember the rest off the top of my head but can get out my copy if want more information. I understand sometimes there will be a phone interview for a similar form.

I hope this helps with what this version might be like.

I'm not on SSDI but worker comp and they can send me to an IME every year if they want.

I think with SSDI if you don't have a psychiatrist and they determine you need one, they will send you to one.

Don't worry...there's nothing you can change about the system's process and worrying only upsets yourself.

I went on disability in 1996 after being on extended leave of absence from the engineering company I worked for from about 1994. Think medicare kicked in after 1 year (that's sort of a black hole in my life during that time so not really sure). My pdoc was the one that put in all the paperwork & H helped me fill out the paperwork I was supposed to fill out.

For some reason I only remember 1 review during that time & they made the disability permanent. I got a paper telling me to disregard a paper about a review just about a year ago.....I left my H 7 years ago & moved 2100 miles away. I no longer waste money on a pdoc because I don't take psych meds....then made me too out of it to live alone & function after getting through the trauma on a high dose of seroquel that totally knocked me out so I could sleep.....I knew I couldn't live like that & live alone & take care of myself.....so I don't bother taking any meds other than my pain medications for the horrible migraines I ended up with....but they are NOT what my disability was based on.

I had never received the letter telling me about a review, so getting one telling me to disregard it was rather strange. I thought even though disability was determined to be permanent that there were still reviews every so often.......the last review was some time in the late 90's......so it's been over 15 years. So many other things have happened to add to the disability situation over those years. I wouldn't even be able to hold a part time position anywhere......so no point even trying.

Try to worry about it too much. It will happen when it happens. just do what you can.

I got a letter stating ones being reviewed last year. I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork and my psychiatrist did, too. Never heard a thing back. :/

I'm on disability too and I never heard anything about reviews until my therapist asked me about it. I never got a letter or anything and I've had it since 2012.

I think if I understand right I will be having one in a couple years. But yeah the primary care doctor probably should work, a psychiatrist might be a little better however. Also though if your condition has not significantly improved...even if you don't have a psychiatrist per say right now they are unlikely to try and kick you off it.

I also think you can appeal if they where to do that, but i don't think there is a high chance of that...also they should still have all the initial records and evidence and will consider that compared to any medical documenation you have and I assume the do some sort of evauluation by asking questions about your functioning.

If the thought of losing your disability income through a medical review worries you, the only thing you can do is see a psychiatrist on a regular basis. If you can't afford a psychiatrist, I believe every county in the U.S. has some agency that will provide access to a psychiatrist on a low cost or no cost basis, and there are various ways to help with the meds. If you are functioning well without psychiatric medications, to the SSA that will certainly look like you've recovered and should have your disability income ended. If may not be the truth of things, but that is who the SSA is likely to view your scenario, in my opinion.
