I'm trying to become self-employed, selling my art online in an Etsy shop. I'm currently on disability and have a meeting on Monday morning with my worker to discuss how to claim income and what sort of benefits I can access to help me with my business. I'm looking forward to it. My shop has been open just over a month and I've had 6 sales online and 3 offline sales from friends who want to buy stuff.

Has anyone else gone this route? I've been reading so much about how to advertise online, and I'm taking an entrepreneurship course on Coursera to help me learn how entrepreneurs think and how to accurately gauge the customer market. Living on disability is hard and I'm hoping this helps a little. I don't see it becoming enough of an income to live off of, but it will hopefully help.

I don't know how things work in Canada, I'm sure someone will come along with some advice for you.

Enjoy working for yourself !

Wonderful you are having success selling your art! I wish I could do something with the orchard to earn a little money at farmers market.

This is fantastic! I did some selling on e-bay about 3 years ago (not comparing that to what you're doing) and found that it was very helpful for my state of mind. I felt less depressed and my brain felt sharper.

It sounds like you're learning and doing things that will be helpful to you in the future.

I receive disability and I went to talk to my worker today about becoming officially self employed with them. I filled out some paperwork to claim my income and project a yearly income so they could keep my disability benefits at the proper level (less benefits if I'm making enough money) but I'm still at rock bottom so I'm not making money yet. They are helping me with startup costs though which is wonderful.

My next steps are to register as a business with Service Ontario, and then open a small business account at my bank. I hope to have that done by the end of Friday.

Paint them to look like tennis balls, then market to dog owners
